Zelensky rejected peace offer days before Russian offensive – WSJ

And WHY IS IT THIS WAY?

Oh, yeah - a murderous dictator decided to turn into a war criminal and invade a peaceful nation. I almost forget about that with all of the excuse-making that conservatives engage in for Putin.

1939 hitler invaded Poland, the US said it wasn't our war , hitler meanwhile got stronger and put the Nuremberg laws into affect and still the American firsters with a whif of antisemitism said not our concern, Dec 7th 1941 arrives, then our concern and hitler had most of Europe

Truth is that if those Baltic states did not join NATO we don’t know if Putin would have tried to confiscate them. We’ll never know.
If I were Latvia, Estonia, et al, I’d be grateful I was in nato at this point in time.
Another truth is that Zelenskyy and Putin have both fucked up. Neither can be pleased with how this has turned out.
Only time will tell who is the ultimate loser but for now they both are, Uk being the biggest one .
Aside:
I wonder how towns in the countryside are fairing.
It's no longer 1991, there's no reason the US should be provoking Russia. Europe and the US will suffer from this proxy war. Refugees are projected to be 10 million. What will that do to the Baltic states? US for-profit wars are notorious for creating refugees. That won't end until other countries start standing up to the DC war machine.

Its the fuel and food shortages which will be the biggest immediate problem for the West. American society is already breaking down, this is throwing fuel on the fire.

German chancellor Olaf Scholz had offered Volodymyr Zelensky a chance for peace just days before the launch of the Russian military offensive, but the Ukrainian president turned it down, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has reported.

Scholz had made what the US outlet described as “one last push for a settlement between Moscow and Kiev” less than a week before the Russian forces were sent into Ukraine on February 24.

The chancellor told Zelensky in Munich on February 19 “that Ukraine should renounce its NATO aspirations and declare neutrality as part of a wider European security deal between the West and Russia,” the paper writes. The daily also claims that “the pact would be signed by Mr. Putin and Mr. Biden, who would jointly guarantee Ukraine’s security.”

However, Zelensky rejected the offer to make the concession and avoid confrontation, saying that “[Russia’s President Vladimir] Putin couldn’t be trusted to uphold such an agreement and that most Ukrainians wanted to join NATO,” the WSJ reports, without revealing its sources for the information.

“His answer left German officials worried that the chances of peace were fading,” the report points out.

Scholz and Zelensky did meet on that day on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, at which each delivered an address.

Why should Putin dictate how Ukraine runs their country?

Lavrov was clear that its war in Ukraine is indeed about reshaping the “world order.” Russia wants Ukraine to be neutral between its foreign affairs and the US and it also wants Europe to stop the drift towards a close alliance with the US.

Lavrov pointed to the US as trying to push for the kind of hegemony it had in the 1990s. His point was that India could suffer under a unipolar world. Lavrov said the US was not really interested in promoting democracy, but rather the US wanted to be the sole leader of the world.

Xi and Putin also see the US as extremely weak now, the place is falling apart....this is the perfect time to push.

There's no way a dem can win the white house in 2024 with fuel and food shortages. More proof of how out of touch the DC establishment is with we the people. Ten million refugees is a lot.

Well, you're certainly not trying to pretend you're on the fence anymore - it's all full-blown Putin apologism now.
since you seem unable to comprehend more then simplistic black and white -referring to anything as
"Putin apologism" I'm not going to bother giving you a respectful reply

Good for him, Putin can’t be trusted, and Ukraine is a sovereign nation.

In my brilliant opinion this only ends one of two ways. A...NATO gets involved and it kicks off WW3 with China, Iran, and North Korea involved as well. Or B.....the slow but sure total destruction and annihilation of Ukraine. Sooooooo,....which would you prefer as there is no realistic option C?
the idea was to avoid "sure total destruction and annihilation of Ukraine."

Zelensky is now offering not to join NATO -
he could have spared his country just that if he took the deal beforehand

NATO is doing what it can & should right now. And I'm not sure if you're keeping up w/ current events, but Russia is losing this war at the moment.
They aren't winning. Russia is paying a price -but nowhere near the people and infrastructure of Ukraine.

I bet the Ukrainian people that Zelenski dismissed as "wanting NATO" would vote for something else

Russia only sent in like 100,000 troops, plus they have air superiority. Every day Ukraine grows weaker. What happens when Russia doubles their troop strength meanwhile with every day that goes by Ukraine grows weaker. I do not like false hope,....it gets more ukranians killed. I hate war.
finally some sanity. then how is war avoided? by deals/negotiations.
what happens where there aren't deals and negotiations?
> "War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy"<

Exactly. Because they arent the ones dying. Real easy for them to talk brave from their own cushy couch. They should go give it a try. See how they like it. Wish this crap would have never got started.
well maybe if NATO didn't expand / The US hadn't fomented a revolution in the Euromaidan / NATO did not arm up and train Uk in secret , and Zelensky didn't just toss a deal away that could have stopped this

What is a "peace offer" to a country that is free, independent and doing absolutely nothing to threaten an aggressor nation?

Hey, Ukraine - do these things, and we won't illegally invade you.

What a deal.

Russia is responsible for it's actions, Zelensky for his lack of actions, NATO for using Ukraine as a proxy war pawn against Russia..nobody has clean hands

What an unreal mischaracterization.

And again - it's just to protect Putin. No one believes that "they're all bad guys."

did you even bother to read the OP? Do you get Ukraine WAS A THREAT TO RUSSIA because it was being armed up and trained by NATO -while Zelensky pumped the west for more?

Nothing happens in a vacuum - virtually everything has a predicate. wise up
