A Reuters special report headlined, “As more transgender children seek medical care, families confront many unknowns,” begins with an anecdote that should be alarming all on its own. The family in question is discussing transgender treatments for a 12-year-old son, who they claim identifies as a girl. The family put their son on puberty blockers before he started middle school.
Most alarmingly, the family claims that they knew their son was transgender at the age of four. This is where you should really start to ask questions about where this is coming from.
When doctors detailed the risks of transitioning the son whom they forced down the path of being a girl at the age of four, they acknowledged that the effects of puberty blockers on brain development and fertility “weren’t well understood.” The doctors warned that puberty blockers could weaken their son’s bones. Then came the fearmongering: if you don’t begin transitioning your son, the doctors claimed, he would remain at increased risk of suicide.
“The risk of people in the transgender population attempting suicide is over 40%,” a doctor told the family. “One of the things shown to lower that is affirming care and an affirming environment.” (Reuters endorses this notion, calling it the “danger of inaction").
Has this actually been shown? In a Swedish study that tracked transgender people over a 30-year span (1973-2003), researchers found that “Mortality from suicide was strikingly high among sex-reassigned persons, also after adjustment for prior psychiatric morbidity. In line with this, sex-reassigned persons were at increased risk for suicide attempts.” A Dutch study tracking results over 45 years (1972-2017) found that “the suicide risk in transgender people is higher than in the general population and seems to occur during every stage of transitioning.” (Emphasis added).
