Putin is never going to ultimately ever accept anything but the complete annexation of eastern and southern Ukraine and the capture of Kyiv.

Trump doesn't understand the mentality of the Kremlin, and he actually acts like he's on the Kremlin payroll.

I don't see how the fact that Russia has not fully repelled the Kursk offensive yet means that "Putin is weak". Your comment reminds me of something that Putin said regarding another Ukrainian offensive though. Newsweek, ofcourse, painted the offensive in glowing terms for the Ukrainian side during the infamous Ukrainian "counteroffensive" of 2023:

What I remember Putin saying, though, was to not be in too much of a rush to remove the Ukrainians from this small foothold. His reasoning was clear- Ukrainians were bleeding way too many men for a position with little strategic value. While I haven't heard Putin say this about Kursk, quite possibly because Kursk used to be part of "old Russia", there is certainly a lot of evidence that Ukraine paid a very dear price to acquire the chunk of land they obtained in Kursk, which has now been much reduced. Larry Johnson from Sonar21 wrote an article yesterday wherein he praised the work of Russian war correspondent Marat Khairullin. Quoting from his article:

As a result, their advance of about thirty kilometers on a relatively small section of the front cost them approximately sixty thousand personnel. The Ukrops losses in equipment were also staggering. In the first days, they lost up to two to three dozen tanks per day.

Within the first few weeks, the AFU lost the group that had been prepared for this operation and replaced it with scarce reserves pulled from everywhere, including freshly mobilized individuals rounded up from the streets.

Failing to achieve their initial goal of capturing the nuclear power plant, the Ukrainians hoped that we would panic and redeploy units from the Pokrovsk direction, weakening it.

I believe this was the last desperate move of a cornered rat. Moreover, if we look closely at the date this adventure began, we can see that it was timed to coincide with specific events, namely the U.S. election race.

Currently, the Ukrainians hold only a few villages near the border and a few ravines where they tried to regroup during their retreat.
