‘You see?’ Russia broke Trump’s hyped partial Ukraine ceasefire after 1 hour

Moscow struck civilian infrastructure Tuesday night, prompting Ukraine to respond with counterattacks.

A highly touted partial ceasefire in Ukraine, brokered by Donald Trump, disintegrated shortly after the end of a phone call between the U.S. president and Russian leader Vladimir Putin during which it was agreed.

An hour after the confab, where the two leaders settled on a very partial 30-day ceasefire halting attacks on “energy and infrastructure,” 40 Russian drones flew into Ukrainian airspace, striking civilian buildings including a hospital in Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine, and an energy substation in Sloviansk, Donetsk region.

“You see? [There is] already an air alert, so this [ceasefire] is already not working,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday night while speaking to reporters.
Zelenskyy also noted that if Russia does not adhere to the fragile ceasefire, Ukraine will fight back: “There won’t be a situation where Russia will continue to shell our energy infrastructure and we won’t respond. We will respond.”

Following Tuesday night’s strikes, Russian officials in Krasnodar claimed that a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil depot Wednesday morning, and the Russian Defense Ministry also reported that several Ukrainian drones had entered Russian airspace.

In the much-awaited call between Trump and Putin, which came after weeks of American diplomatic efforts to find a resolution to Russia’s war in Ukraine, Washington tried to persuade the Kremlin leader to accept the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which had already been agreed to by Kyiv.

However, Russia only agreed to a partial ceasefire on civilian and energy infrastructure.

“Today, Putin effectively rejected the proposal for a full ceasefire,” Zelenskyy stressed, adding that “the pressure on Russia must continue for the sake of peace.”

Putin is never going to ultimately ever accept anything but the complete annexation of eastern and southern Ukraine and the capture of Kyiv.

Trump doesn't understand the mentality of the Kremlin, and he actually acts like he's on the Kremlin payroll.

And we must ofcourse trust in Ukraine, which has always been so honest [sarcasm off]. Here's some quotes from a Russian article on the subject:

Quoting from it:

The Russian military has said that it had to shoot down its own drones to fulfill President Vladimir Putin’s order to halt strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The president gave the order as a result of discussions with his US counterpart Donald Trump on Tuesday.

During their phone call, Putin accepted a proposal by Trump for the sides in the Ukraine conflict to refrain from striking each other’s energy infrastructure for 30 days, the Kremlin said later on Tuesday. The Russian leader “immediately” instructed the country’s military to comply, it added.

The Defense Ministry confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that it had “received an order from the Supreme Commander-in-Chief to halt strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.”

According to the ministry, when Putin’s order came in “seven Russian attack drones were in the air, targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities related to the country’s military-industrial complex in Nikolaev region.”

To fulfill the command, the Russian air defenses had to “neutralize” the UAVs. Six drones were shot down by a Pantsir missile system and another by a fighter jet, it added.

The article continues:

The defense ministry also claimed that “just several” hours after the call between Putin and Trump, “the Kiev regime carried out a deliberate attack with three fixed-wing drones on an energy infrastructure facility in the village of Kavkazskaya in Russia’s Krasnodar Region.”

The strike damaged an on-site oil reservoir and caused a blaze, which is yet to be extinguished, the statement added.

The Kavkazskaya facility is used to transfer crude from rail-transported tanks to a pipeline operated by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), an international firm that lists US energy giants Chevron and Mobil among its partners.

“Clearly, this was a premeditated provocation by the Kiev regime aimed at derailing the US president’s peace initiative,” the statement read.

I don't see how the fact that Russia has not fully repelled the Kursk offensive yet means that "Putin is weak". Your comment reminds me of something that Putin said regarding another Ukrainian offensive though. Newsweek, ofcourse, painted the offensive in glowing terms for the Ukrainian side during the infamous Ukrainian "counteroffensive" of 2023:

The Russians summed up its failure at the end of the year:

What I remember Putin saying, though, was to not be in too much of a rush to remove the Ukrainians from this small foothold. His reasoning was clear- Ukrainians were bleeding way too many men for a position with little strategic value. While I haven't heard Putin say this about Kursk, quite possibly because Kursk used to be part of "old Russia", there is certainly a lot of evidence that Ukraine paid a very dear price to acquire the chunk of land they obtained in Kursk, which has now been much reduced. Larry Johnson from Sonar21 wrote an article yesterday wherein he praised the work of Russian war correspondent Marat Khairullin. Quoting from his article:

Marat Khairullin is, in my opinion, the best Russian war correspondent in the field. Normally, I would excerpt only a portion of his piece, but his latest work is a step above his usual and merits your full attention. I am reproducing it here in full, but encourage you to click on the link and provide some clicks for his Substack site.

If Donald Trump hopes to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, then he needs to do one thing — terminate all military and intelligence support to Ukraine. Barring that, Trump will continue to be a facilitator of Ukraine’s attacks on Russia. That makes him an accomplice of Ukraine.

Unless the US ends the assistance to Ukraine, Russia will continue to demilitarize Ukrainian forces while stringing out the negotiations. Zelensky also must be removed from his post as President. Those are unconditional demands by Russia.

Now quoting from Marat's article:
**
From the very beginning, we stated that the "Kursk adventure" by the AFU was a suicidal move. For many months, the enemy had been probing the possibility of entering our territory along the line from the Bryansk to the Belgorod regions (everyone remembers the stories about sabotage and reconnaissance groups). By striking the Kursk region, they initially hoped to reach Kurchatov and seize the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.

Our forces noticed that the Ukrainians were preparing something but did not expect them to amass such significant forces. Despite this, the enemy was met with a worthy response. However, by secretly accumulating troops and deploying frontline air defense, they pushed forward, ignoring losses and literally advancing over their own corpses.

It is already known that in the first four days, we eliminated about a third of their frontline air defense potential, not counting other equipment. But they were seeking media attention.

Naturally, they failed to reach Kurchatov. Our military contained their offensive. After this, the AFU began digging in literally everywhere. Their losses during this period exceeded those during the much-hyped "counteroffensive" of 2023 by two to two and a half times, reaching up to a thousand personnel per day.

As a result, their advance of about thirty kilometers on a relatively small section of the front cost them approximately sixty thousand personnel. The Ukrops losses in equipment were also staggering. In the first days, they lost up to two to three dozen tanks per day.

Within the first few weeks, the AFU lost the group that had been prepared for this operation and replaced it with scarce reserves pulled from everywhere, including freshly mobilized individuals rounded up from the streets.

Failing to achieve their initial goal of capturing the nuclear power plant, the Ukrainians hoped that we would panic and redeploy units from the Pokrovsk direction, weakening it.

I believe this was the last desperate move of a cornered rat. Moreover, if we look closely at the date this adventure began, we can see that it was timed to coincide with specific events, namely the U.S. election race.

Currently, the Ukrainians hold only a few villages near the border and a few ravines where they tried to regroup during their retreat.

As far as I know, Russia has always valued strategic value over media value, which I think most would agree is the better choice in the long run.
