CA has a surplus because they have higher taxes, whereas almost every single red state has a deficit because of low taxes.
I always giggle when Conservatives talk about unfunded liabilities, as if they have any clue what they're talking about.
First of all, any "unfunded liability" needs to have an amount of time accompanying it; for instance, you could say they have a $50B liability, but that's over 50 years, which makes it seem like less of a liability because it's not.
Secondly, you're using a revenue baseline from when tax revenues were lower thanks to the MANY recessions your tax cuts caused.
Thirdly, you cannot say those are unfunded liabilities because you don't know what tax revenue is going to look like 5 years, 10 years, 25 years, 50 years in the future, and if you think you do, then you're a fucking liar, idiot, or both.
You have no fucking idea what you're talking about.
There is no such thing as an "unfunded liability"...that's a term Conservatives invented in order to scare people about economic things Conservatives truly know nothing about.
If Conservative economics ever worked, we wouldn't have plunged into a recession a month before COVID lockdowns.

In California, Democrats have supermajorities in the State legislature, as well as the governorship, making it easy to implement progressive policies to ameliorate the adverse effects of inflation on state residents.
That's the dirty secret; only progressives really know how best to manage an economy.
