Rick Perry amassed more than $17 million during his first seven weeks as a presidential candidate, fortifying his reputation as a fundraising powerhouse and injecting positive news into a campaign recently stung by controversy.
In addition to announcing that he had raised $17 million last quarter, Perry’s campaign also told reporters Wednesday that he has $15 million in the bank — a formidable sum that will allow Perry to fund more extensive ground operations and TV ads than any candidate but Romney.
Perry's strong performance gives him "the opportunity to pull it together and right the ship," said Keith Appell, a Republican strategist who is unaffiliated with a 2012 campaign.
"Anybody who has been governor of Texas for 10 years has a lot of wealthy friends who have lots of other wealthy friends," he said. "This number confirms that aspect of his appeal as a candidate, in spite of missteps in recent weeks."
