When my wife or kids ask me to explain someone's odd behavior, I tell them: for every person with an IQ of 140, there are four with an IQ of 90. They have us outnumbered.

IQ isn't a logarithmic, not linear, quantity. 100 is average; 120 puts you in the 80th percentile, and 80 puts you in the 20th percentile.
An IQ of 140 puts you in the 99th percentile and an IQ of 90 roughly puts in you in the 40th percentile. There are a great deal more people with an IQ of 90 than 140, which is an extremely high score. Then again, IQ levels above 120 don't generally correlate that much with increased success.
EDIT: This chart seems to use a different scheme than the +- 20 scheme I mentioned. 80 is in the 15th percentile and 120 is in the 85th.

My son got a 780 in the SAT. I figured him for an IQ of 160+.
