WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Treasury Department said Monday it had received $1.9 billion from Chrysler to settle a $4 billion loan.

The department said that while the $1.9 billion repayment is less than the original loan, the amount is still more than Treasury had expected to recover.

The original loan was made on Jan. 2, 2009, by the Bush administration. At the time, the government was scrambling to provide emergency support to both Chrysler and General Motors and their auto financing arms.

The loan was extended to finance Chrysler LLC, which was later spun off when Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy in 2009. Chrysler Holding, the new parent company, made the repayment Monday.

Treasury said Monday that as a result of the repayment, Chrysler Holding and Chrysler Financial, the auto financing arm of the company, no longer have outstanding obligations to the $700 billion bailout fund, known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

The original $4 billion loan went into default when Chrysler filed for bankruptcy in April 2009. In June 2009, the assets of old Chrysler were sold to the holding company as part of the bankruptcy court proceedings.

The Treasury Department made the announcement about the loss from Chrysler on a day when rival automaker General Motors Co. reported its first quarterly profit in nearly three years. That moved GM closer to a stock offering that would repay at least part of the $43 billion it owes the government.

Seriously... what the hell? Because Chrysler paid more than expected, they should be absolved of the other $2.1B???

They are still a going concern. They should be responsible for paying the other $2.1B... until it is ALL REPAID.

by strange coincidence I recently got a letter from the IRS that they believe I still owe them $420 from 2008.....I intend to send them a copy of this article and a check for $192......

Obama blasted Chrysler's other creditors as greedy for asserting their contractual rights. Now you want the admin to demand that they get every last cent back? That would be an interesting move. I don't see why the government should get preference.

valid observation.... but yes... it is just as wrong now as it was then. There is NO reason they should get away without paying back every cent. To that point, they should also repay their other creditors.

The people who gave Chrysler those debts knew full well that Chrysler could go into bankruptcy. They are responsible for loaning to an entity that went into bankruptcy.

I'd chip in a fund to pay the difference just to see the letter they send back

yes, anyone who extends credit understands they are taking risks.

But the Chrysler bankruptcy was engineered by the White House. It was designed to give the UAW union control of the company. It was a hose job on all creditors and stockholders not named the UAW.

The FACT that the loan from TARP was done AFTER the bankruptcy means it is not something that should be written off in such a manner. There is NO reason at all that even remotely justifies letting Chrysler off the hook on the other $2.1 BILLION.... unless you consider another $2.1 Billion gift to the UAW a justifiable reason.

The rules of math only apply to the little people.
