World power swings back to America

If the shale deposits are thousands of feet down it is impossible for the fracking fluids to pollute the water table. That can only happen if the deposits are near the surface or are spilled at ground level and seep into the ground.. We have a fracking project going in England and there were some earthquakes alleged to have been started by the fracking process but they were around magnitude 2.5 which isn't even noticed except by seismology recorders. As for the gas coming out the tap story.

For the most part the evidence shows that fracking is safe. Though there are instances where it has caused problems and this should not be ignored.

That's not really what's at question here though. What's at question here is "Are Petroleum Derived Waste, aka PDW, being managed appropriately"?

Didn't I already say that?
Ehhh, that's language that's minimizing a very serious risk. It's not the occasional spills of fracking fluid that are at issue here. Those are easily contained and mitigated since they are generaly very small in scope. It's the management practices used by Petroluem companies for storing spent fracking fluids in large volumes that are currently unregulated that is causing the problem. The same issue exists for other PDW's as well.

Isn't that the job of the EPA?

Have you ever been to ND?

I stopped at Fargo and Bisquick on my last roadtrip. Driving through the flat prairies is kind of neat, because it contrasts from much of the rest of the trip, and they are pretty.

That said, when we stopped in Bozeman, MT, and I spent a few hours at the local speakeasy, there were several people who were transplants from ND, and they were like, "I don't really have to explain why I moved out here to Bozeman, do I?" LOLZ

That's not how it happens Tom. Most of the contamination of ground water by fracking liquid is due to the fact that the fracking fluids, when they are pumped out of the well, are in most cases contaminated with hazardous materials. Because fracking fluids are classifed as a "petroleaum derived waste" or "PDW" for short, they are exempted from the major laws regulating the management of hazardous waste (RCRA) even though in many cases they are hazardous. These fracking fluids are often stored innappropriately in unlined, above ground open pits and lagoons where these hazardous fracking fluids leach into the nearby ground water thus contaminating it.

BINGO!!!! It takes tons of water(The 2nd most valuable resource on earth next to Oxygen) to frack!

Ehhh I think Wise is over stating that problem. The petroleum industry is wise enough to know that profits depend on not shitting in your own nest. The major problem with current shale reserves exploration is that a lot of these companies are taking advantage of the fact that petroleum derived waste are exempted from hazardous waste managment regulations under the Resource Consevation and Recovery ACT (RCRA for short) which is the major focus of the documentary "Gaslands".

This exemption is extremely valuable to the petroleum drilling and exploration industry as with out it the cost of doing business goes up substantially. So that puts the petroleum industry into a position where they have to do a better job of policing themselves or risk losing their RCRA exemption which would cost them tons of money. I tend to agree with you that the big boys do a better job of self policing but still, the current situation is certainly a public relations fiasco due to the environmental impact from those companies who aren't doing such a good job.

Personally I'd love to see the the Petroleum Industry lose their PDW Exemption as it would mean more money for me. :)

Tell that to the people that are being affected. Don't forget to bring a bullet proof vest.lol They are corrupt enough to know that profits depend on cutting corners. Corps are all about getting rich over night. No one cares about long term forecasts.

EPA is a sell out.

Sure toolious Maximus. Do you work at 711. Oil companies just saw BP get ass fucked by Obama without the courtesy of a reach around. Yeah they don't care. Lol

So why don't make it 101, a number which is strangely appropriate?

Ok. I read it and now I read at least 101 articles on fracking. Now what the hell does that article have to do with the fact that large amounts of water are used to extract the gas and the water becomes polluted?
