President Donald Trump has nominated William Barr to be the new attorney general, a post he held in the 1990s.

By replacing Jeff Sessions, who was fired by Mr Trump last month, the 68-year-old will take charge of the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election.

US media report he has been critical of some aspects of that inquiry.

A well-known conservative lawyer, Mr Barr held the role under President George H W Bush from 1991 to 1993.

The president called him a "highly respected lawyer" by both Republicans and Democrats and "a terrific man" while speaking to reporters on the White House South Lawn.

"I did not know him until recently, when I was going through the process of looking at people," Mr Trump said. "He was my first choice from day one."

Currently, Mr Barr is counsel at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm in Washington DC.

If Mr Barr is confirmed by the senate after his official nomination, he will replace the current acting attorney general, Matt Whitaker.

Mr Whitaker had been a controversial pick from the start due to his views on the special counsel's inquiry.

As Mr Barr held the top justice position before - and was unanimously confirmed by the senate at the time - the president seems to be more hopeful about his bipartisan appeal.

William P. Barr, who ran the Justice Department under President George Bush, said he sees more basis for investigating the uranium deal than any supposed collusion between Mr. Trump and Russia.

“To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility,” he said.

[h=1]he Justice Department Still Hasn't Told The Federal Accountability Office That Jeff Sessions Quit :palm:[/h]

Federal law requires the vacancy and any acting appointment to be reported "immediately" to the Government Accountability Office. A month after the shakeup at the Department of Justice, the GAO hasn't been informed.

President Donald Trump may have a pick for who he plans to nominate to be attorney general, but his Justice Department has yet to file the required paperwork that Jeff Sessions has left the office. Under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, the head of the Justice Department was to report the vacancy in the office of attorney general and any appointment of an acting attorney general to the head of the Government Accountability Office "immediately."

It's been a month since Trump forced then-Attorney General Sessions to resign and then tweeted that Matthew Whitaker, Sessions' chief of staff, would be the acting attorney general.

There has been no notification. The comptroller general of the United States, the head of the accountability office, hasn't received any reporting of either the vacancy or the acting appointment, a GAO spokesperson for the office told BuzzFeed News on Friday morning.

Federal agents used a confidential U.S. witness working inside the Russian nuclear industry to gather extensive financial records, make secret recordings and intercept emails as early as 2009 that showed Moscow had compromised an American uranium trucking firm with bribes and kickbacks in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, FBI and court documents show.

They also obtained an eyewitness account — backed by documents — indicating Russian nuclear officials had routed millions of dollars to the U.S. designed to benefit former President Bill Clinton’s charitable foundation during the time Secretary of State Hillary Clinton served on a government body that provided a favorable decision to Moscow, sources told The Hill.

The racketeering scheme was conducted “with the consent of higher level officials” in Russia who “shared the proceeds” from the kickbacks, one agent declared in an affidavit years later.

The Department of Justice decided to continue "investigating" this for four years without Congress or the public knowing.

From today’s report we find out that the "investigation" was supervised by then-U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein, who is now Deputy Attorney General, and then-Assistant FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who is now the deputy FBI director.

Robert Mueller was head of the FBI from Sept 2001-Sept 2013 until James Comey took over as FBI Director in 2013. They were both involved in Russian collusion - since this case started in 2009 and ended in 2015.

The New York Times even reported on the crooked deal in 2015:

As the Russians gradually assumed control of Uranium One in three separate transactions from 2009 to 2013, Canadian records show, a flow of cash made its way to the Clinton Foundation.

Uranium One’s chairman used his family foundation to make four donations totaling $2.35 million.

Those contributions were not publicly disclosed by the Clintons, despite an agreement Mrs. Clinton had struck with the Obama White House to publicly identify all donors. Other people with ties to the company made donations as well.

The Clintons took cash from Uranium One officials before the deal was approved by Hillary Clinton’s State Department.

The Clintons hid the donations - a clear violation of the Memorandum of Understanding Hillary Clinton signed with the Obama administration wherein she promised and agreed to publicly disclose all donations during her tenure as Secretary of State.

Nine shareholders in Uranium One just happened to provide more than $145 million in donations to the Clinton Foundation in the run-up to State Department approval.

So can we expect Barr to appoint a special counsel for Uranium One?

How does he feel about Pizzagate?

So can we expect Barr to appoint a special counsel for Uranium One? How does he feel about Pizzagate?

:dunno:

It's not just the Clintons who are implicated in a uranium deal with the Russians that compromised national-security interests.

The cool half-million the Putin regime funneled to Bill Clinton was five times the amount it spent on those Facebook ads — the ones the media-DEMOCRAT complex ludicrously suggests swung the 2016 presidential election to Trump.

By contrast, the staggering $500,000 payday from a Kremlin-tied Russian bank for a single speech looks like part of a multi-million-dollar influence-peddling scheme to enrich the former president and his wife.

At the time, Russia was plotting — successfully — to secure U.S. government approval for its acquisition of Uranium One, and with it, tens of billions of dollars in U.S. uranium reserves.

The Uranium One scandal is not only, or even principally, a Clinton scandal.

It is an Obama-administration scandal. The Clintons were just doing what the Clintons do. The Obama administration, with Secretary Clinton at the forefront but hardly alone, was knowingly compromising American national-security interests.

The administration green-lighted the transfer of control over one-fifth of American uranium-mining capacity to Russia, a hostile regime — and specifically to Russia’s state-controlled nuclear-energy conglomerate, Rosatom.

Worse, at the time the administration approved the transfer, it knew that Rosatom’s American subsidiary was engaged in a lucrative racketeering enterprise that had already committed felony extortion, fraud, and money-laundering offenses.

In six weeks Trump will hate Wm Barr as well.

In one week, you lefties will have drummed up some other drunken slut to make false claims against another Trump nominee. Perhaps you can recycle Christine Ford. I hear she's not busy.
