I think they realize that America is a poor market for EVs. Europe ands asia make a lot more sense for them. But there are only so many car buyers there and lots of makers ramping up. America is just too spread out and too much of it is really cold. Cold is a real issue with them. I recently discovered that Iowa was routinely double digit below zero and they're just above the midline of the country. Imagine what it must be like in Minnesota and Montana ! BRRRRR
And I think everyone is hedging their bets on hydrogen or hydrogen/electric ones.

Meanwhile, bungling Biden is STILL buying oil from Russia which helps pay for their excursion into Ukraine and he's also talking about purchasing oil from the nuke-seeking Iranians to help them fund that project.

Thankfully, some people who have a track record of success are noticing and are willing to speak up, even if it costs them money.
This is the brilliance of Musk, and probably one of the reasons he is wildly successful.
He is viewing this problem through the lens of reality and he correctly comes up with the logical solution.
If just 14 months ago we were solid with energy production, and not just with the building of the Keystone pipeline, but pumping oil all over this country, why not go back to it ASAP?
That Musk is willing to bite the bullet so the USA can recover quickly from bungling Biden's disastrous energy policy and use fossil fuels is extraordinarily patriotic. And he's an immigrant.
I now fully understand why so many people love this guy.

Still, in all fairness,
if people insist that race is merely a social construct and not biological,
it's totally reasonable to refer to white African naturalized immigrants and their successors
as "African Americans."

Would a person from Libya who is now a citizen of the U. S. also be an African-American?
Or, would he be North African-North American?
I would think it's how you 'self identify'.
I just watched some woman on TV identify as 'Russian-American'.
She said most immigrants choose to be 'American' or choose to retain some ethnic portion of themselves.
She is a Professor at UC Berkeley and teaches Russian Literature (she mentioned her love of Dostoevsky). She said she's taught her children Russian.
I thought it was an interesting observation.
Some immigrants come here and teach their children their ethnic language.
Others come here and deliberately choose NOT to do that.
But, back to the original subject, I've heard Blacks say "I'm American, I've never been to Africa. I was born here".
Same thing for Arabs. They say "I am an American" I served in the army and live here. I have Arab extraction in my family background. Will we discuss Trump being a Kraut? No Trump ever served in the armed forces. Trump's dad came here to escape German army conscription. His son was a draft dodger.

It's not misleading if you are at least casually familiar with South Africa. I still remember the HS student in Chicago, from about 15 years ago, who caused some butthurt when he actively campaigned for African American of the Year.
Born in Africa, lives in America.

Have you noted that the left thinks a man (like Nordberg) can say he's a women (like Nordberg does on Saturday nights) and we're all supposed to act like it's true, but an actual African like Elon Musk can come to America and we aren't allowed to say he's an African American, even though he is?
I think he is allowed to say that.
