I think some....if not most people need God for various reasons.
1. To believe that there's something bigger than yourself.
2. As a comfort. Knowing that at some point we are going to die is scary knowledge. The thought that after we pass away, our spirit, soul, essence..whatever....lives on is a great comfort to many.
3. It keep SOME people in line.
4. It creates hope for those who will never be anything more than a drone in the beehive of life.

The story is inaccurate. Barber said believers would be in the minority by 2041 not that they will disappear.
