Rationalist
Hail Voltaire
The Constitution also gives Congress power to “provide for the common defense and general welfare,” a broad grant of authority to create federal spending programs such as Social Security.
Wrong, as usual.
The General Welfare clause permits Congress to pass laws necessary to carry out their Constitutional duties, which are enumerated in the Constitution. There is no blank check. As the 10th Amendment clearly states, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
Even a drone such as yourself should be able to understand that.
"Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated." Thomas Jefferson
"[Congressional jurisdiction of power] is limited to certain enumerated objects, which concern all the members of the republic, but which are not to be attained by the separate provisions of any." James Madison
Social Security, but also Medicare, Medicaid, federal education spending and countless other cherished programs.
Can you explain to me why these things cannot be funded and operated at the State level (or lower)?
