Reports out Thursday night reveal yet another principal of the Trump campaign in trouble.

Newly appointed CEO Stephen K. Bannon, the former head of Breitbart News, was charged in 1996 with domestic violence against his second wife, several news outlets reported. The charges were eventually dropped, and Bannon pleaded "not guilty."

The New York Times noted that, according to the police report of the incident, there were "allegations that he threatened his then wife, the accuser, with retribution if she testified in the criminal case. ... "

The New York Post first reported the news. NPR has not independently confirmed the charges, but Politico posted the full police report here.

Here's part of Politico's write-up:

"The Santa Monica, Calif., police report says that Bannon's then-wife claimed he pulled at her neck and wrist during an altercation over their finances, and an officer reported witnessing red marks on her neck and wrist to bolster her account. Bannon also reportedly smashed the phone when she tried to call the police. While the case ended when Bannon's ex-wife did not appear in court, the incident presents a new problem for the Trump campaign following the hiring of the controversial Bannon. ...

"According to the police report, on New Year's morning 1996, Bannon's then-wife asked for a credit card to go shopping, and they argued over whether she should just write a check. This quickly turned into a bigger argument about the couple's finances and future. 'She told him that maybe he should find another place to live, that she wanted a divorce. [REDACTED] said he laughed at her, and said he would never move out,' the report states."

NPR found Bannon was in some financial trouble at the time, with multiple federal and state tax liens against him, owing as much as $136,000 to the IRS. (More on those below.)

Alexandra Preate, a spokeswoman for Bannon, told Politico: "The bottom line is he has a great relationship with the twins, he has a great relationship with the ex-wife, he still supports them."

NPR reached out to the Trump campaign for a response. An email and phone call were not returned, as of Friday morning. (We will update if we hear back.)

Trouble at the top

Bannon, a controversial figure before entering the Trump campaign, is now the third Trump campaign chief to find himself in hot water. Trump's first campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, was charged with battery after videotape showed him grabbing a reporter. The charges were later dropped.

It may have been 20 years ago, but it still defines character, by all reports Bannon is a bully, it is just more evidence of his character flaws.

If you are going to talk to me please do it directly. It shows an inherent character flaw to use a malicious troll as a go between. Can you go any lower?

Hillary Clinton is an alleged husband beater and a huge bully to boot, but of course you will just ignore that as being irrelevant. Bannon is not running for president, is he? Lucky for you that you've no skeletons in your closet. As they say, let him/her who is without sin cast the first stone...

Amazing how quickly the Trumpkin jumps from one excuse to another in his continuing bid to justify his support of a WIFE BEATER.

:rofl2: Do you have any photographic evidence?? Did she punch out poor bill??

She gave him a black eye, caused blood to spill on the bed and the wound needed stitches, it has been documented many times that she has a volcanic temper and a mercurial personality who treats staff like shit. The more salient point here though is the huge double standard at play. If a woman hits a man it is because he deserved it, whilst the other way round and it's a heinous crime, always, with no exceptions or mitigating circumstances.

Was he convicted of any offence? Of course I know small matters like that mean little to you. Bill Clinton is mentioned in the flight records for the Lolita Express at least 26 times but that means nothing as well. Frankly I have little time for Trump but I have even less for Ms. Clinton, he may be an unmitigated disaster but I'd like to see him have a go. I would rather have neither to be honest, they are both pretty ropey choices but that's the crappy system you have over there. It is just mind boggling that a system that spends billions and takes years resulted in two such awful choices.

Yep... Maybe she was paid off not to show?? Or perhaps she was in fear of the brute??

Yes maybe but I believe in the presumption of innocence till proved otherwise. I refer you to the excellent women's rights campaigner Erin Pizzey who started the first battered women's shelter in England. She said that in most cases the women were just as violent as men. She had to leave England because so many so called feminists threatened to kill her. If that isn't the supreme irony then I don't know what is?
