Why would doctors need to know if you have a gun?

While Mott makes the best argument for such a silly ruling, I still don't agree with it. I don't mind telling my doctors that I own firearms....mine assume that after a couple of visits with me anyway, but it is still none of their business, IMO. I can't think of anything medical that my physician would connect to gun ownership. I am on Chantix right now and the pharmacist and doctor didn't even ask me about my guns. Or course by now they assume. :)

Nah. I don't think we need a law. I just won't answer the question.

What are you saying you understand?

k...

I have no reason to believe that my doctor has any need to know if I have guns. So I wouldn't answer the question. I wouldn't get upset or make noise.. I'd simply put it on the form as n/a... guns have nothing to do with my kidney stones.
Well that's certianly your right but it's their right to not accept you as a patient if you don't cooperate.

i've seen bullshit, but this takes the cake. what if you own a meat cleaver? what about about rat poison? what about a car that is unsafe?

you're being ridiculous. owning a gun has ZERO to do with anyone's MEDICAL well being. unless you're dealing with mental health concerns. but that clearly is not the case here and not the case you're arguing.
No, you're full of shit. If I'm the physician I'm the one that's going to have to fix the hand that's been cut by a meat cleaver and if you have rat poison in your house I'll be the one who treats your kid for rat poisoning. As your physician I may ask that question to discourage you from keeping rat poison in a home with young children just as I may discourage you from possesing a gun in a home with young children. As a physician that is my right and as a patient it is your right not to divulge that information if you disagree. You're free to choose any physician you want.

NOTE:

mott's or derp's logic:

a physician can refuse treatment (unless emergency) if you are of a faith he doesn't agree with. or even homosexual.
Yurts logic. I don't like what someone is saying so I'm going to accuse them of saying something they never said or even implied because basiclly Yurt thinks you're stupid.

wait a minute....you just claimed they can ask you anything and deny you for anything. are you saying that is not true, that that can't ask you certain questions and can't deny you treatment for certain beliefs or sexual practices?

It is legally none of the physicians business but within the practice and scope of medicine it is a physicians business to ask you, as their patient, any question they feel will help them to serve your medical needs. That is why physicians have a legally protected privacy rights in regards to that doctor/patient relationship. You can tell a physician anything you want that is relevent to your health and wellness and that physician cannot divulge nor be compelled to divulge that information.

horse manure. what does owning a gun have to do with MEDICAL conditions? how does owning a gun AFFECT your medical condition.

you're more likely to die in a car accident than from a knife or gun. get real mott.

No, you said that. I said that a physician can ask you anything "RELEVENT TO YOUR HEALTH/WELLNESS/MEDICAL NEEDS" nor did I say "They can deny you anything". I said "THEY DON'T HAVE TO ACCEPT YOU AS A PATIENT."

Why do you feel compeled to lie or misrepresent what people actually said Yurt?

And you feel that a Physician doesn't have the right to ask you if you own and operate a motor vehicle? You're an idiot Yurt.

let's make this crystal clear then.

1. can a physician ask you about your religion or sexual preferences? yes or no.

2. can a physician deny you treatment based on your answers above? yes or no.

again....tell me where that "right" derives from mott.
Well I would guess the first ammendment. One does have the right to ask anyone anything Yurt. Quit being obtuse. It's not like a physician has a right to compell someone to answer their questions.
