Connecticut Lawmaker Wants to Change Date of Halloween

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) – This year’s Halloween falls on a Monday, but one Connecticut legislator would prefer the state to recognize the holiday on a weekend, even if it means not celebrating on the 31st.

A recent proposal by Conn. State Rep. Tim Larson pitched the idea of celebrating Halloween on the last weekend of October rather than the holiday’s traditional Oct. 31 date. Larson (D-East Hartford, South Windsor) came up with the idea after talking with parents of young children, who usually find themselves either having their night of trick-or-treating cut short if Halloween falls on a school night.

“Halloween is fun night for the whole family, but not so much when you have to race home from work, get the kids ready for trick-or-treating, welcome the neighborhood children, and then try to get everyone to bed for an early school and work morning,” Larson said in a statement. “Halloween has also become one of the top holidays for retailers selling candy, decorations, costumes and general party supplies.

What a ridiculous proposal. And from a Democrat to boot. For shame.

Why the hell should ghosts be forced to give up their weekends, time they probably spend with their little ghosts teaching them how to avoid camera equipment and suchlike?

Just wait until the Ghost Union hears about this.

Monday Halloweens do suck. I've got a better idea, though - just make the day after Halloween a holiday. Same w/ the day after the Superbowl....

I am appalled. Part of the fun of Halloween is rushing around getting stuff done so I can take my kid trick or treating, staying up a tad bit later than usual on a week night eating candy, and this night watching football with him. Three years ago he sat with me on a tree stand and I killed a deer, drug it out of the woods, got him dressed up and while he and his mom trick or treated I got the deer skinned and butchered. Fun times. Don't change the date to fit the social calendar. Make parents sacrifice a little (time, sleep, whatever) for their kids to enjoy the holiday. Got our punkin carved and candy ready for Monday night. What is this guy thinking? :)

I think making Halloween the last sat. of the month is a great idea. It would be safer for kids to run around and give them a day to be sick after eating the candy and not interrupt school.

I agree, Halloween on Monday, bad idea. There is no religious signifigance to the holiday anymore, so make it the last Saturday of the month!

Halloween is the 31st, people... Laws won't change that. :D

I for one almost never celebrate it, because I go to parties where there is beer, and women dressing down to impress me, throwing themselves down in submission (or whatever it is they think that they are doing)
