As many may know, I am a big fan of the Fair Tax, which is the idea of a consumer-based tax to replace our current taxation of income. There are a number of unbelievable advantages to the Fair Tax, and from a revenue standpoint, it's a much more efficient and fair system. It would eliminate all payroll taxes, sending every working American home with a tremendous amount more money in their pockets each week. It would also eliminate corporate taxes, and literally repatriate trillions of dollars in US capital, currently at work for other nations. International corporations would be breaking our doors down to come here, hire thousands upon thousands of employees, and create millions of new jobs. The economic boon of such a measure, would be unlike anything ever witnessed in human history. Tell me, what could be a more "perfect world" for a capitalist, than the US with no corporate tax?
The plan, as proposed at http://www.fairtax.org is to replace the income tax with a national sales tax, which would already be included in the price of everything. The initial estimates of what percentage would be needed to match current revenues through the income and corporate tax system, is 23%. It also includes a component to compensate lower income families with a prebate for the amount of tax they may have to pay for basic necessities of living. Farmers and self-producers could really do well, they get to pocket the prebate.
There are several other tangible 'beauties' to this idea, if it works as anticipated, we could pay our national debt off. It would eliminate all the tax loopholes, all the 'deals' cut and made over the generations, protecting big corporations like GE.. there would be no corporate tax, just the 23% sales tax. The current system, the individual can cheat, it only takes one person, it's not that hard to do, and many do it all the time and never get caught. With the Fair Tax, it would take TWO parties to cheat. And that can be dealt with by levying some very harsh criminal punishments for collusion. It brings revenue in from every consumer in America, many of which have never contributed anything to the current income tax revenue system, many who have found a way to bilk and cheat the current system, illegals, criminals and drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes... everyone would pay the Fair Tax. Hence, the name!
So why are the Liberals so opposed to such an idea? Simple... it diminishes governmental control, and relies more on the individual. Liberals are Statists, they want the IRS to rule over our lives and act as 'Bruno the Thug' to forcibly remove us from our money and give it to them, because they are smarter than the rest of us, and know better how to spend it. From that viewpoint, they construct an 'argument' based around it, and that's why none of it ever makes a lot of sense. Oh... those corporations will not have taxes to pay? Oooohhhh noooo!! We can't do that! The more they sell, the more taxes are generated! Every corporation I know of, makes something and sell it, so with a consumer tax, you would want them to make and sell as much of that stuff as possible. This kind of flies in the face of the Anti-Capitalist Left, who want a Central Government planning and controlling us all.
