Why Libs Oppose Consumer-based Taxes

As many may know, I am a big fan of the Fair Tax, which is the idea of a consumer-based tax to replace our current taxation of income. There are a number of unbelievable advantages to the Fair Tax, and from a revenue standpoint, it's a much more efficient and fair system. It would eliminate all payroll taxes, sending every working American home with a tremendous amount more money in their pockets each week. It would also eliminate corporate taxes, and literally repatriate trillions of dollars in US capital, currently at work for other nations. International corporations would be breaking our doors down to come here, hire thousands upon thousands of employees, and create millions of new jobs. The economic boon of such a measure, would be unlike anything ever witnessed in human history. Tell me, what could be a more "perfect world" for a capitalist, than the US with no corporate tax?

The plan, as proposed at http://www.fairtax.org is to replace the income tax with a national sales tax, which would already be included in the price of everything. The initial estimates of what percentage would be needed to match current revenues through the income and corporate tax system, is 23%. It also includes a component to compensate lower income families with a prebate for the amount of tax they may have to pay for basic necessities of living. Farmers and self-producers could really do well, they get to pocket the prebate.

There are several other tangible 'beauties' to this idea, if it works as anticipated, we could pay our national debt off. It would eliminate all the tax loopholes, all the 'deals' cut and made over the generations, protecting big corporations like GE.. there would be no corporate tax, just the 23% sales tax. The current system, the individual can cheat, it only takes one person, it's not that hard to do, and many do it all the time and never get caught. With the Fair Tax, it would take TWO parties to cheat. And that can be dealt with by levying some very harsh criminal punishments for collusion. It brings revenue in from every consumer in America, many of which have never contributed anything to the current income tax revenue system, many who have found a way to bilk and cheat the current system, illegals, criminals and drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes... everyone would pay the Fair Tax. Hence, the name!

So why are the Liberals so opposed to such an idea? Simple... it diminishes governmental control, and relies more on the individual. Liberals are Statists, they want the IRS to rule over our lives and act as 'Bruno the Thug' to forcibly remove us from our money and give it to them, because they are smarter than the rest of us, and know better how to spend it. From that viewpoint, they construct an 'argument' based around it, and that's why none of it ever makes a lot of sense. Oh... those corporations will not have taxes to pay? Oooohhhh noooo!! We can't do that! The more they sell, the more taxes are generated! Every corporation I know of, makes something and sell it, so with a consumer tax, you would want them to make and sell as much of that stuff as possible. This kind of flies in the face of the Anti-Capitalist Left, who want a Central Government planning and controlling us all.

Liberal aren't opposed to it, you maroon.

Oh, that's right... I guess I should have clarified... liberals are for a VAT tax IN ADDITION to the income tax. So they really want BOTH kinds of tax, on consumption and income... couple that with the death taxes, and they really cover all the bases! How silly of me to insinuate liberals weren't in favor of a tax...I am so sorry!

What's needed is an income tax that taxes ALL income. Wages, capital gains, inheritances, tips, interest on savings.....any and all money one receives. Income....money coming in.

If money isn't taxed until it is spent it encourages hoarding. The tax from that money is taken out of circulation unti it is spent. Furthermore, it permits citizens to make money, hoard it, then spend it elsewhere without paying taxes here. That's exactly what some corporations do. They sell their product here, use some tax loophole, then move the money elsewhere.

Hmmm.... by "hoarding" do you mean... saving? Money is still of value whether it is spent or saved, I don't understand your logic. If they sell their product here, we collect a 23% tax on it, so that's exactly what we want them to do...sell their product here. They can spend their money wherever, just like they can do that now... no difference, you admit that yourself. With the Fair Tax, there would be no "tax loophole" because we are no longer taxing income, we are taxing consumption. We have an abundance of that in America.

Income isn't really productive when compared to capital gains, which is why it makes sense to tax income at a higher rate. It also encourages the middle class to invest their money as well. Payroll taxes should be done away with entirely, as they essentially penalize an employer for employing people - the antithesis of productivity.

One reason why they don't like the Fair Tax is the fact that they would have to start paying.

Many of them don't pay income tax.

nothing big is going to change, the libs get handouts for 50% and momentum to soak the actual tax payers even more.
The threads are cute though

Oh, no doubt... liberals want the status quot when it comes to tax systems, they don't want to change what we currently have... too much power is brokered over it, too much influence the government would have to give up. The Democrats literally can't afford the Class War to be over, and the Fair Tax would pretty much end it. The political elite in general, would never agree to let go of such a convenient tool and device to 'govern' us. This is why we would probably have to repeal the 16th Amendment to implement the Fair Tax.

Fair Tax has about as much chance as The Pac 10 vs The SEC, ie NONE

Libs not only have it, they will soon make it more progressive. They will get their higher taxes on the rich, it's inevitable. Obama new pitting 98% vs 2% would maybe be enough.
What the libtards can't even beging to understand in the tea leaves is, most middle class especially the educated plan on being rich and though not in the top 2 they have no interest on joining Obama's declaired war on them.

The 'Fair Tax' is certainly better than our current system, but it is still regressive in nature. It would also likely lead to black market formation. The flat tax with a high standard deduction is a far better system. It too would eliminate all the loopholes and deductions, but it would be simple, PROGRESSIVE and truly 'FAIR'.

Obama supports supply side economics!!! NO, you say!!! Why the fuck did he give a tax cut to 98% of workers when he was in a jam.

No the reason that they don't like the fair tax is because it's intrinsicly unfair and it shift the burdon of taxation from those who control most of the money onto those who don't. Unless you make well above $200,000/year you'd have to be an idiot of the greatest magnitude to support regressive taxation schemcse such as "The Fair Tax".

...which demonstrates that you know nothing about the proposed Fair Tax. It would include rebates for low-income households, and according to several estimates, would actually be more progressive than the current tax structure.

I have seen it over and over and over again. It's a ponzi scheme that shift the burden of taxation onto the middle and professional classes. The poor and working classes all ready pay little in federal income taxes. Accurding to who's analysis? The Hoover Institute?

OK, please explain to me how any "flat tax" can be "progressive". That rather defies logic.

Consumption taxes shift the burden unduly to the middle classes. The really rich people cannot possibly spend the amount of money proportionate to their corrupt income levels. Money for them is just a control lever. That lever needs to be made weaker. The rich need to pay more because the entire society is corrupted in their favor.

And btw, rich does not start at 250k. Move that limit to something obvious like 2 million dollars and there will be no problem getting justice at the polls.
