Why is LSD illegal?

It is on the schedule 1 list. So it is illegal because lawmakers have determined that it has no valid medical use and has a high risk of abuse. I believe that this drug reached that list because of the risks of flashbacks where users who have stopped taking the drug experience effects of the drug even though they no longer take it and have not for sometimes very long periods of time. It has also been related (by the same legislators) to psychoses, like schizophrenia and/or severe depression. Users have also had accidents, etc. under the influence endangering others.

That is the "why" of it, though I'd love to hear some statistics and read some studies regarding the dangers. For instance, how often might somebody have a flashback? Is that still an issue? How often do they cause accidents in comparison to alcohol users? Things like that.

Flashbacks are rare. I've done LSD about 30 times and never had one.
LSD is being used in clinical research to help those with depression or alcoholism.

Do you agree with this being a valid federal law though?

The premise for this authority is the commerce clause expanded via precedent when the courts upheld legislation banning a farmer from growing wheat for personal use. Although he had no intentions of selling that wheat - the mere fact that other people buy wheat means his non commercial activity can be regulated be the federal government as commercial activity.

And PTSD. We just legalized psilocybin in Colorado for testing and treating anxiety conditions... Almost legal. Just the more natural version.

I do not. I think if it took a constitutional amendment to make alcohol illegal, it means it would take one to make any drugs illegal for adults should they want to take them.

LSD originally was being tested for therapeutic benefits. Then college student got their hands on it and Nixon freaked out.

I have never tried it, but I plan on doing so when my kids are a little older....

Why would it be illegal?

Wouldn’t recommend it, as “zymurgy” pointed out, it ain’t what it used to be, now you are not sure what it is, the days of Owsley Stanley and Sunshine Superman are long gone, finished when it became a profit drug

When was the last time you took LSD?

Decades ago, many decades ago, in fact, decades ago in the last Century

But it is the same for marijuana, unless you grow it yourself it is not the same as it used to be, even the legal marijuana, not medical, but what you can purchase at the store, ain’t the same. Can’t imagine what would go into street level acid today

So you have no idea about the quality of LSD today. Thanks for confessing.

As I said, using marijuana as an example, not what bit used to be, could see the trend heading that way even those decades ago, called profit, and the fact it is not a popular drug today kinda confirms my suspicions
