Why Does The US Right Distrust Representative Government?
Why do the American right fear goverment so much?
Why are unaccountable, unelected corporate leaders better suited to guide and run a nation than elected, representative leaders?
Arnold, you are asking three separate questions, and this will require addressing them individually...
The right doesn't really distrust representative government, it just seems that way, because of the left holding power at the moment. You see, in America, when the left holds power, representative government is a hindrance to progress, those who don't hold power should just sit down and shut up, otherwise, they are going to be called all kinds of names and ridiculed as radicals who are out of touch. The opposition voice is silenced, and we effectively have Democratic government, Democratic Socialist to be exact. When the right manages to gain control of power, the viewpoints on "representative government" change on the left, suddenly it becomes the hallmark of our republic, and what makes our nation so great, and gives a balance of power to the minority... so, it's a completely different mindset regarding "representative government" between the left and right, dependent upon which party is currently in power.
Hmm...
Why do Americans fear Government? Okay... it probably has something to do with our ancestry and heritage. We mostly come from forefathers who shunned the governmental controls of Europe and came to a nation where they could enjoy personal liberty, without those constraints. They specifically designed a custom-made form of government to do the functional things a government needs to do, but allow the people full control and access to it, and also allow the fullest amount of personal liberty. The more control government has, the less liberty the individual has, that is a simple fact of life.
Okay, finally...
Why are unaccountable, unelected corporate leaders better suited to guide and run a nation than elected, representative leaders?
Hmm.. don't know, maybe for the same reason unaccountable and unelected union leaders, PAC leaders, special interest leaders, activist leaders, etc., are apparently also suited?
I don't know that I agree with the premise that these "corporate leaders" are "guiding and running" the country. They can contribute politically, they can advocate politically, and they certainly have political influence, and why the hell shouldn't they, in a capitalist free enterprise free market society?
Arnold, have you ever heard the expression; To bite the hand that feeds you?
This is what I don't understand about the anti-corporate thing... These "rich and greedy corporations who make profit on the backs of the poor" are the providers of the jobs, the tax revenues, and the economic prosperity and growth for the country. Seems to me, whatever corporate business experts believe is best for corporate business, we should probably listen to them. Or at least give them a seat at the table alongside ACORN and PNAC... as opposed to making all corporations evil entities threatening to eat our babies!
