Why do atheists care about religion?

Interesting video. I liked it, though some of it is the same stuff that gets bantered about. One of the things I get tired of hearing is that our founders were not religious at best or anti-religious at worst. Yes, a few of them might have been and you might even be able to point a few of them out (I'll give you Paine but not Jefferson) but for someone to read what our founders wrote and to see the laws they put forth and to come up with the idea that they were not (or anti) religious is crazy.

All that being said, I don't want a theocracy. Nor do I want to live in a country that is governed by people who have no sense of right and wrong or morality or immorality. I like the fact that some of them are willing to stand up and say that morality isn't subjective...I don't believe it is either. But I don't want all of them coming down on "my side." We need balance and common sense. I like the bantering back and forth between believers and non-believers, religious and non-religious...It maintains a better balance in this country on a political pendulum that I don't want to see swing too far to the left....or the right as far as goverance from a "moral" perspective is concerned.

Well said, Leaning.

because most Jesus freaks try shoving it down educated peoples throats

And educated religious people put up with crap from atheists spouting the standard "I am more intelligent because I don't believe".

Both sides have their obnoxious and pushy people.

The higher the education the less belief in the cartoons that are religion

Yeah, I know thats what you think and what some polls say.

But other polls say 90% of the people in this country believe in God. So the you have to be selective in your reading to go along with your ideas.

My church has medical doctors, surgeons, lawyers, university professors, and scientists. I would be willing to match many of their intellects against yours.

The overwhelming majority of the population does not even have a college degree. Take a look at advanced degrees and scientist. LOL

all too true

why is it that people that follow some religions feel the need to force their beliefs on others, sometimes violently...or put the force of law behind their beliefs contrary to our constitution's first amendment

oh well:(

because killing in the name of religion is exempt from being called murder.

I care about religion because a lot of people get their worldview and values from it. Those things ultimately control their behavior. we all should understand the mental illness that is organized religion, and many disorganized religions.

Plenty of those are religious too. Or at least acknowledge that they believe there is something greater than ourselves.

This "greater than ourselves" nonsense has got to stop. The ocean is greater than ourselves, an elephant is greater than ourselves. That's too vague and meaningless a statement to indicate belief in "religion" per se.

Plenty of those are religious too. Or at least acknowledge that they believe in some spiritual being that is greater than us.

How about that, asshat?

I haven't seen a poll recently, but I'd bet advanced degrees are less than 50% cartoon believers.

Now Top, this is the sort of shit that makes me laugh at you.

YOu get bent out of shape when people talk up religion or want it to bemore involved in public life. But then you make all these demeaning comments.

What you are doing is not much different from the hellfire & brimstone preacher saying paople are going to hell.

I guess it's not obvious that I'm joking. I envy you religious people, I wish I too had something to replace mommy tucking me in at night and relieving fears.
I do however have zero taste for the cartoons being brought into politics. Unless you adopt a peacefull religion like Rasta.

I have no patience for those who wish to force their beliefs on others or for theocratic nonsense.

YouTube- Why do atheists care about religion?

Remember this!
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross." Sinclair Lewis, 1935
Yeah, because totalitarianism in the U.S.S.R. came all wrapped up in Jesus. You can tell that by the way they used to watch the churches and make people disappear, they really just wanted everybody to believe they were taken bodily into heaven!

Clearly only Jesus brings fascism.
