Why didn't Putin invade when Trump was President?

Because he didn't need to.

Trump was doing what Putin wanted him to... trying to destroy NATO from within.

It's because tRump was and is Putin's bitch who attempted to do what he was told by his pimp Putin. This until the majority of 2020 got a handle on the situation of America at eventually giving Putin's bitch tRump and his lawlessly hacked in un-American swine of a so-called administration the boot!

I shudder to think of the possibilities of what might have transpired had Trump been reelected.

Trump's own National Security Adviser said that Putin was kind of expecting Trump to withdraw from NATO in his second term

Can't be! I mean, Trump's such a tough guy - it had to be that Putin was afraid of him!

Not only was Trump serving Putin's interests w/ regard to NATO - he was also helping w/ Putin's other big priority: weakening American democracy.

Putin was waiting for Trump to wreck NATO from the inside. Donald was doing the job. If he won perhaps we would have been fighting on Putin's side.

The President has sole power to make treaties, subject to approval by Congress, so I guess Trump could have unmade it but under the NATO charter withdrawals do not take effect until one year after written notification of the withdrawal is received, and in that year even Trump's supporters in Congress would have deserted him and he would be impeached and the withdrawal itself withdrawn. Putin may not have known that but Trump would.

My take on it is that on paper, Congress has some oversight authority on our Treaty obligations.

But as a practical matter, the chief executive is the one who cultivates the alliances, manages them, implements them.

I have zero confidence in Trump's ability to cultivate our traditional European alliances

I have high confidence trump would have used a second term to subvert NATO and undermine American credibility in the alliance.

He undermined it in his first time. By the time he left our credibility was out the window. It took Biden's strength on the Ukraine invasion to get it back.
