The government added $5.3 trillion in new financial obligations in 2010, largely for retirement programs such as Medicare and Social Security. That brings to a record $61.6 trillion the total of financial promises not paid for.

This gap between spending commitments and revenue last year equals more than one-third of the nation's gross domestic product.

Medicare alone took on $1.8 trillion in new liabilities, more than the record deficit prompting heated debate between Congress and the White House over lifting the debt ceiling.

Social Security added $1.4 trillion in obligations, partly reflecting longer life expectancies. Federal and military retirement programs added more to the financial hole, too.

The $61.6 trillion in unfunded obligations amounts to $534,000 per household. That's more than five times what Americans have borrowed for everything else — mortgages, car loans and other debt. It reflects the challenge as the number of retirees soars over the next 20 years and seniors try to collect on those spending promises.

yeah... ALL IS WELL.... no need for cuts to these programs... just keep pushing the problem on to future generations. Just do whatever it takes to make sure it doesn't implode on our watch.... right Dems?

Can anyone think of a hugely expensive government program that's failed in every major test of it's effectiveness since 1945?

Louisiana House may consider bill to ban abortion

The bill was scheduled for House debate on Tuesday, but LaBruzzo asked to postpone the measure because of concerns by state budget officials about whether the proposal could jeopardize the state's Medicaid funds.

The measure would repeal previous state exceptions that allowed abortion when a pregnancy results from rape or incest.

There's a way to save money. Force women to bear children resulting from an incestuous act. Then they can deny medical care for the resulting mentally and physically damaged children and, of course, deny any form of counseling for the women and, basically, watch lives be destroyed.

Yea, I'm sure future generations will look back fondly upon the enlightened views our generation held. :palm:

Our nation is trillions of dollars in debt and your response is to site a bill in the assembly of Louisiana?

Yes.... it is his pathetic way to deflect criticism of the almighty government programs he cherishes. Next he will tell you that those who try to fix said programs are evil and want to kill old people and starve the poor.

Maybe it's time to cut all corporate subsidies and let the 'free market' fund itself...

This is still the richest country in the world. The money will come up...some way. That "way"always at the last minute. They always do. but they need to make sure that they get their face time first.

How do you suppose our country will come up with tens of trillions of dollars?

Tax the corporations. That's where the money is.

Our entire GDP is about $15 trillion. Since small business accounts for half of the GDP, that doesn't leave much of a tax base. In other words, it's impossible to fix Medicare and Social Security by taxing corporations. Furthermore, doing so would be detrimental to economic growth.

This is a prime example of what is wrong with America these days. Too many people think like you, we'll all wake up tomorrow and things will just keep going as they always have, someone will figure out something. The numbers SF posted don't even seem to compute in your empty little noggin, you can't wrap your addled mind around them. If you taxed all corporations 100%, it would be enough to run the country for about 3 months. Completely eliminate the military, and you can fund the government for 6 months. This is how far out of whack reality is, with what liberals constantly lament. $61.6 trillion the total of financial promises not paid for. Think about it for a minute! A trillion is one thousand billions...a billion is one thousand millions! Are you grasping any of this bear? We don't have that much money, and we are quickly approaching a point where we can't ever expect to have that much money, it will be impossible for us to ever get there.

Your gut reaction is to "tax the corporations" but anyone who understands capitalism knows, corporations don't pay tax, consumers do.

Yea, we can save future generations by exterminating the generations that produce them. WHY is it that right wingers NEVER have a single penny of HUMAN capital in their thoughts, arguments or solutions? WHY do right wing solutions require some group of human beings to evaporate.

Medicare and Social Security are HUGELY successful programs. They have save millions of lives and prevented the financial ruin of millions of people who retire and are living on fixed incomes.

Letting old people die isnt the solution. The outsourcing idiocy of globalization has pushed too much of the usual taxable activity overseas. It's a revenue issue, and protectionism is the answer.
