SAN JOSE, Calif. — Three suspects have been arrested in the slaying of a San Jose nursing student who was killed by a stray bullet as she drove down a downtown street, authorities said Wednesday.
San Jose Police said Johnny Lozano, Caris Warren and Jessie Grant were all being held in the Aug. 3rd slaying of Kimberly Chico.
During their investigation, homicide detectives determined that the shooting was gang-motivated and that Chico was just “at the wrong place at the wrong time.” There is no known link between the suspects and the victim.
"This was a very sad case of a victim in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Homicide Unit Commander Michael Kihmm in a prepared statement. "My condolences go out to her family. The department's homicide detectives and Covert Response Unit worked tirelessly to solve this case.”
Authorities said a Gang Suppression Unit officer arrested Lozano during a pedestrian stop in the area of Senter Road and Coyote Road on Aug. 7th. The San Jose Police Department's Covert Response Unit later located and arrested Warren and Grant.
On August 3rd, at approximately 1:20 a.m., the three suspects were involved in a shooting downtown during which a stray bullet struck Chico, authorities said.
Chico was an uninvolved occupant of a vehicle that was passing through the area at the time of the shooting.
