Real-world differences that actually matter:
- You can vote a democratic socialist out of office. You couldn’t vote Stalin out.
- AOC and Zohran Mamdani want more elections, more unions, more free speech, and more competing parties. Lenin wanted to “smash the bourgeois state” and replace it with a single vanguard party.
- Personal stuff like your toothbrush, laptop, clothes, a small business, or a family farm stay yours. What gets socialized are monopolies and natural oligopolies that control housing, healthcare, energy, and transit.
- No gulags, no censorship, no secret police, no banning religion, no forced labor camps. Those are deal-breakers.
They’re the people who say, “We can get to socialism the way we got women’s suffrage or the 2 day weekend, by organizing, marching, and winning elections until the billionaires have to play by the same rules as the rest of us.”
