Prosecutors in Florida and Oklahoma where convicted mass murder James “Whitey” Bulger faces possible death penalties in two murders said they are waiting for the aging mobster’s federal sentence to be handed down in Boston before they decide whether to go ahead with capital trials in their states.
“We are going to evaluate the entire situation after the sentencing has occurred. Our actions and decision will come after that.” Miami States Attorney spokesman Ed Griffith.
In a statement, Tim Harris, Tulsa County States Attorney’s office said they are also waiting to see what happens at Bulger’s sentencing in U.S. District Court in Boston before deciding how to move forward. Bulger’s sentencing is expected to take place in November.
Griffith said Bulger stands indicted for the first degree murder of John Callahan in 1982. In 2001 Bulger was indicted for the 1988 murder of businessman Roger Wheeler in Tulsa, Okla.
