oct 23 2023 A New Jersey man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to bias intimidation for harassing and yelling racial slurs at his neighbors.
Neighbors complained that Edward Mathews terrorized their Mount Laurel neighborhood for years with racially motivated rants and attacks, according to NBC 10 Philadelphia. Videos of Mathews comparing a Black man to an animal and using the n-word went viral.
In 2021, the Mount Laurel Police Department launched an investigation after a resident filed a harassment complaint against him. Shortly after, officers responded to a report and found Mathews using racial slurs while engaging in a verbal altercation with four residents.
Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw announced Mathews pleaded guilty to four counts of bias intimidation in the fourth degree and one count of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with the intent to distribute in the second degree
