White House Officials Debate Releasing Photographs of Bin Laden’s Corpse

The Obama administration has photographs of Osama bin Laden’s dead body and officials are debating what to do with them and whether they should be released to the public, officials tell ABC News.

“There’s no doubt it’s him,” says a US official who has seen the pictures and also reminds us that OBL was 6’4”.

The argument for releasing them: to ensure that the public knows and can appreciate that he's dead. There is of course skepticism throughout the world that the US government claim that it killed bin Laden is true.

The argument against releasing the pictures: they’re gruesome. He has a massive head wound above his left eye where he took bullet, with brains and blood visible.

In July 2003, the US government released photographs of Saddam Hussein’s dead sons Uday and Qusay Hussain but not until after they’d been touched up by a mortician, making them look not quite real.

:palm: I see Obama has learned nothing since putting an end to the birth certificate issue. I say release the photo's, so their is no question he is dead.

I just responded to this topic on another thread. But I will repeat it here.

I think it would be a mistake to show the photos. When we did so with Saddam, they were questioned anyway. All it did was serve to immortalize the asshole's death. I think the same would be true with Osama, only to a much greater extent as his followers and iconic figure surpass that of Saddam. Also to have shown the pictures etc... would have been contrary to our position on doing so of the deceased. We made the mistake of doing so with Saddam, to this point we have not done so with Osama, I think it prudent to keep photos to ourselves and to take the higher road. It makes it appear (IMO) as more of 'justice being served' than 'gloating over the death of Osama'. IMO... it marginalizes Osama to a degree and doesn't give him the 'glorification' of having his death photo 'immortalized' if you will.

I think it would flat out give rise to violence against American's overseas. Way too risky to do imo. I completely believe he is dead and that it was our SEAL's that got him. The tiniest part of me thinks it remotely possible they took him alive and do not want the world to know-but that's just because I LOVE intrigue :D

it's a happy day and bitter ghestapo wannabee's like webbway will troll it for any stench they can find.

I will put the tiniest part of your mind to rest with this thought.... Osama was essentially neutered by forcing him into hiding and relinquishing control to his lieutenants. Taking him alive would have been far too risky in terms of if ever found out, it would have either been a black eye on the US or if he was still alive when discovered the 'death' was faked it would lead to a very public hearing and nightmare for the US. If you are in need of a conspiracy though, the more likely is that he was sitting on the couch watching re-runs of American Dad and they went ahead and shot him for 'resisting' when he pointed the remote at the Seals to avoid capturing him alive.

No I am convinced it pretty much went down the way it's being reported- My spy novel thoughts were just that...

I'm opposed to releasing the photographs. Although I am happy that justice has been served, I also believe that as a civilized people we must refrain from glorifying violence and death.

As for those who have their doubts -- well, they will have doubts regardless. But for those who are capable of simple reasoning, it is obvious that bin Laden is dead. It would be stupid for the government to lie about killing bin Laden, as he could simply release another video proving that he is alive. That, and al-Qaeda has already condemned the killing.

Yeah, it's pretty much been confirmed by al Qaeda's response. At first I thought it would be necessary, but when the enemy pretty much confirms what happened then there really is no need.

There is supposedly a video out of the mission, including the kill. I'll see if I still have the link.

It's possible that somebody was watching the feed and taped it. Tracing that back would be too easy and some dude with a clearance and his thumb drive burning a hole into the interwebs will go to prison for that kind of stupidity... so I hope that it isn't. The other way would be if some "enemy" was able to tap our sat feeds, if that was true wikileaks wouldn't have been talking diplomats.

Naval Special Warfare Command release:

"Though Bin Ladin is dead, al-Qa’ida is not. The terrorists almost certainly will attempt to avenge him, and we must—and will—remain vigilant and resolute. But we have struck a heavy blow against the enemy. The only leader they have ever known, whose hateful vision gave rise to their atrocities, is no more."
- Leon E. Panetta, director, CIA

True, I say the White House host a picture viewing for reporters, show them the image, then they may report to the public that it is indeed Bin Laden. It will silence the naysayers, especially if one of them is Limbaugh or Hannity.

The left's obsession with Hannity and Limbaugh is quite amusing.... it is THEIR obsession that keeps those idiots in business.
