Washington (CNN) -- White House advisers are considering recommending alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed be tried in a military court instead of a civilian one in New York City, a senior administration official told CNN on Friday.

In November, Attorney General Eric Holder announced his intention to try Mohammed in a New York civilian court.

New York police have estimated the cost to the city would exceed $200 million per year in a trial that could last years. They have said, among other things, that they would need to install more than 2,000 checkpoints in Lower Manhattan.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday the administration was evaluating its options "based on New York City logistical and security concerns."

ACLU Takes Shot at Obama Over 9/11 Trials

The American Civil Liberties Union takes a shot at President Barack Obama in a full-page ad in Sunday’s New York Times over the issue of where to try the 9/11 defendants.

The ad’s headline asks, “What will it be Mr. President? Change or more of the Same? [sic]” The ad shows Obama morphing into former President George W. Bush in a four-frame photo series.

Obama’s Justice Department said last year that it planned to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged planner of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, in civilian court in New York City, rather than in a military commission as the Bush administration had planned.

But lawmakers and local officials in New York protested that decision, citing security risks and possible disruptions.
Republicans have raised concerns that a civilian trial could give Mohammed a high-profile forum to express his extremist views.

Last week, Obama administration officials suggested that they could return to the idea of trying the defendants before a military tribunal. At the same time, the White House is pushing Congress to change military commission rules to give defendants more rights. Administration officials have been negotiating with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.).

Why would a trial take years? Just waterboard the fuck out of him until he has no more information to give then put a bullet in his brain.

I agree with the ACLU on this one.

Shocking I know, but the Messiah can be wrong...!

New York police have estimated the cost to the city would exceed $200 million per year.....

Criminal trials are moved all the time. For example, if the court believes a defendant won't get a fair trial in the jurisdiction where the crime took place due to the nature of the crime.

So, move the trial to a potato field in Idaho or a corn field in Iowa. Pay the farmer an absurd amount of money for a few acres of land and erect a building. After the trial use the building for a recreation center or a library or medical clinic or.....

One can do a lot with $200 million. As for security there will one road to watch and in the case of a potato field a sight of vision for miles around. Plus the added bonus of job stimulation.

What say you? :)
