Senior U.S. military officials pushed for additional special operations personnel to be sent to Ukraine in the lead up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the request was denied amid White House fears it could provoke Russia, according to a report.

As Russia stationed about 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine last year, U.S. military officials told lawmakers in December that a "few hundred" additional special operations personnel should be sent to the country to assist with military advice and training, Politico reported Sunday.

The personnel would have trained Ukrainians on guerrilla tactics and unconventional warfare methods. The training would have been different from the formal training at the Yavoriv Combat Training Center in western Ukraine, sources told the outlet.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin even planned to bring the matter directly to President Biden for approval, a pair of people familiar with two December briefings with lawmakers and congressional aides told Politico.

White House officials, however, were reportedly concerned that the deployment of additional personnel would hamper diplomacy efforts and escalate the situation. The plans were stopped in response to those fears, according to a congressional official familiar with a briefing delivered by a Pentagon official to the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"This is part of a larger story in which the White House pulled its punches in the lead-up to the conflict, when we already saw that the Russians were amassing troops," Ilan Berman, a senior vice president of the American Foreign Policy Council, told the outlet. "Based on either incorrect assumptions about what Vladimir Putin wanted to do or based upon worries about provoking Putin — he didn’t need any provoking! — it’s one example of these calculations leading to a more passive approach than we could have taken."

The White House said that "no such plans" for the training missions "were ever presented" to the White House or the National Security Council, according to the outlet. A Defense Department spokesperson added that the White House did not "cancel any planned training activities for Ukraine until U.S. forces were repositioned in February."

The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

No further information. Russia states 130 dead- as in the link.

What's the dumbass emoticon for ?

If Putin says it, it must be true.. In your pro-Putin view. You must be getting paid by Russia. Do you get rubles? They are not worth much now.
The sad part is Putin is painting himself into a dangerous corner. He has turned many nations against him. He has bankrupted Russia by deciding to attack a peaceful neighbor. He has caused many nations to blacklist him permanently. Russia cannot recover well from this. Ukraine will be fighting him forever.
The final result will be him having to drop an A-bomb. Putin has no way to rebuild. Russia is a pariah in the world.
Putin did not learn the Afghanistan lessons. He will require incredible protection for the rest of his life and he will not be able to travel. I hope the Russian generals stop him from using the bomb.

TRUMP held back Military Support to Ukraine over Politics .... CHECK-MATE

Team Obama refused to arm Ukraine at all

after Russia annexed Crimea and began arming separatists in eastern Ukraine with tanks, armored vehicles and rocket launchers, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko came to Washington to plead for weapons to defend his country. In an impassioned address to a joint session of Congress — with Biden sitting directly behind him — Poroshenko said his country appreciated the nonlethal assistance he was getting, but declared “one cannot win a war with blankets.”

The Obama-Biden administration was unmoved. The Wall Street Journal reported at the time that “President Barack Obama stuck to his refusal to provide weapons or other lethal military gear to Ukraine.”

Why we shouldn't arm Ukraine

But Obama abstained from shipping weapons to Ukraine because there was no reason to think they would do much good — and there still isn't. Lethal military assistance combines several unappealing features.

It would cost a lot of money that would probably be wasted, since the arms would not be sufficient to stop Vladimir Putin from achieving any military goal he sets

While Obama was in office it was viewed as a waste of money by the left to arm Ukraine and would upset Putin
