Cuba to drill five new oil wells by 2013

By Carlos Batista (AFP) – 20 hours ago

HAVANA — Cuba on Tuesday announced plans to drill five deepwater oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico beginning this summer, expressing confidence that its efforts will be rewarded with major new energy finds.

"We're about to move to the drilling phase," said Manuel Marrero, an official with the government authority tasked with overseeing Cuba's oil sector.

"We're all really hopeful that we will be able to discover large reserves of oil and gas," said Marrero, who added that the ventures would be undertaken with the help of unspecified foreign companies.

"China and India, the two energy-hungry giants of Asia, have been outbidding each other to snap up promising oil and gas reserves across borders, across continents. In Africa, Central Asia, and even in far-flung Latin America, the two have been engaged in fairly close contests to buy oil-producing companies or to invest in exploration and development to feed their fast-growing economies."

We should definitely expand domestic drilling - no doubt. But you lose all credibility on this issue when you belittle wind power.

Oil is the present; renewables are the future. Both play a part in energy independence.

Oil is the present; renewables are the future. Both play a part in energy independence.

Industrial wind factories are destructive to communities and local environments.

Fragile ecosystems are destroyed. Birds and bats are killed. Animal habitats are disrupted and wildlife is driven from the area.

Noise and vibrations cause human health problems, including sleep problems, headaches and nervous disorders.

Home values and real estate prices are reduced, with some properties becoming impossible to sell.

Wind turbines produce electricity, but only 1% of American electricity comes from oil.

Wind power provides only extra energy, it does not produce baseload electricity.

You're right about windmills, of course,..... I keep forgetting what its done for Holland.

BP is to resume drilling in the Gulf this summer.

You're right, guys. How could I be so dumb? I mean, when in history have we ever seen technology advance rapidly, or see an innovation that few were even dreaming of even 5 years earlier.

I've got a hunch that bravs was one of those guys in the '80's saying that computers were okay for keeping records and holding data, but would never amount to much in terms of commerce or communication...

wrong, Oil is the present. Oil and all of the above are the future.
You lose credibility when you pretend we will be off oil in anyone here's lifetime.

You've heard of electric cars, right?

It's not as far off as you think. I know you're an oil guy, but it's almost time to embrace the future...

So where does the electricity come from? Wind power will never be a practical alternative until they crack the storage and transmission problems. Even the arch-guru of climate change James Hansen is for Integral Fast reactors which produce very little waste.

When people talk about wind, solar & other alternatives, they talk like we have reached the pinnacle of technological advancement in those areas.

If history has taught us anything, it's that we'll probably have technology in renewables in 5-10 years that isn't even a figment in most imaginations yet...

Energy planning and implementation requires long lead times, hoping for some miraculous technology to come along and save us all is just utopian hogwash for the most part. The problems are not just technical, they also have a political, logistical and social dimension. How do you know for instance, that Saudi Arabia won't go into meltdown and seriously disrupt oil supplies? One hopeful technology is geothermal which at least has the virtue of being constant and capable of providing a baseload but that will take a vast amount of investment for an emerging technology. I have just bought some shares in US Geothermal Inc. (AMEX:HTM) but it is definitely for the long term rather than a quick buck.

Nice....is that one of your lame (very lame) attempts at being clever ? Keep on dude.....after a few posts from you my self esteem just soars....:good4u:

Could have said the same thing about computers & IT in the '80's....
