Where's the Riots?

Howey

Like the racists on this forum, Matt Drudge got a virtual hard-on praying for riots after the Zimmerman not-gulity verdict. And, as I've pointed out before, his links had nothing to do with his screaming fag headlines.

Via Alex Koppelman, we see that the Drudge Report's banner of links creates the impression of America "gripped" by "fury." The careful reader will notice that the photo doesn't seem to reveal any burning buildings or cops buckling under a hail of rocks and bottles.

Instead, there are links to a white guy in Portland saying that "every cop is a target," another link to the Oakland protests from Saturday, and a headline from the Daily Mail that doesn't really jibe with the story:

Demonstrations, from Florida where the trial took place to Atlanta, DC and New York, remained largely peaceful, though Los Angeles protesters managed to shut down an entire freeway and thousands of New Yorkers mobbed Times Square and blocked traffic for an hour.
But "shutting down a freeway" by walking into it was not the wave of riots speculated about on Drudge's site and elsewhere. If you only got your news from that site and its links, you'd think that race riots were breaking out with regularity, and the media was ignoring them because the perps were black. (As McKay Coppins reported at the time, the "why aren't you covering this" coverage surged in the wake of Trayvon Martin stories.)

Did police scramble in the wake of the verdict to prevent anything from going sour in the cities? Yes. It just seems noteworthy that very little went sour. "Urban blacks may riot when X goes wrong for them" is a perennial story, one that got written in the run-ups to elections in 2008 ("Police fear riots if Barack Obama loses US election") and 2012 ("New threats to riot if Obama loses the election"). An act of civil disobedience that blocks traffic—on a Sunday, not even rush hour!—isn't an act of fury that tears a country apart. Honestly, don't the panic-mongers remember what it felt like when peaceful Tea Partiers were accused of incipient anti-government violence?

I never thought there would be.

People forget how much of a difference the addition of video made w/ the Rodney King trial. Without a video, there wouldn't have been riots.

We had small ones in Oakland, smashing of police cars, damaging some restaurants and other businesses' property. About normal for any Oakland protest really.

Protesters clashed with police Sunday night and Monday morning, with one group of protesters blocking a major freeway.

Rocks and D-cell batteries were thrown at officers at the corner of Washington Boulevard and 10th Avenue.

Civil rights leaders, including the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, urged peace in the wake of the verdict. Jackson said the legal system "failed justice," but violence isn't the answer.

But not all the protesters heeded those calls immediately after the verdict.

In Oakland, Calif., during protests that began late Saturday night some angry demonstrators broke windows, burned U.S. flags and started street fires. Some marchers also vandalized a police squad car and used spray paint to scrawl anti-police graffiti on roads and Alameda County's Davidson courthouse.

Yes, there was vandalism in Oakland but it was after the main rally was done. And Oakland did lay off a lot of police officers recently.

On Sunday night, several hundred protesters marched through the streets. There were minor reports of vandalism and police made one arrest.

Many peaceful protesters were also upset, saying the vandals represented a small percentage of demonstrators and seemed to be focused more on causing damage than fighting for justice.

Whent said 50 officers were brought in from throughout the city to augment the eight to 10 officers downtown, and with the limited staffing, it would have been unwise for officers to wade in to arrest vandals in "that kind of crowd." Instead, police will rely on other evidence, including video, to try to identify suspects, the chief said.

Well, they're working on those yet....
Sharpton....Martin family atty.....The Wire...the prosecutors, even the Syrian rebels are
fanning the flames.....

You despicable lowlife liar. No one is fanning the flames. Folks are hurt, angry and deeply disappointed....but not enough to riot.
It's racists like you that are fanning the flames.

Didn't say that. But you can't use Oakland violence to paint all the people who attended rallies against the decision as "rioters".

I see what you did there. When did I "use Oakland violence to paint all the people who attended rallies against the decision as rioters"

Here are the facts:

Oakland has been short staffed on police officers for a long time. When you basically tell residents you can't respond to issues at their home like certain break ins you know there is a problem. It is a completely incompetently run City. Every protest in Oakland, whether it's Occupy or Oscar Grant or Trayvon Martin ends up with violence and/or vandalism. It's ridiculous.

Gee, guess I missed all your words of praise for all the rallies that were peaceful. What thread was that post in?

You know how RazorX ONLY posts stuff about black violence? When you ONLY discuss a rally that had some violence after it (and Cawacko is correct in his post re Oakland) you look like you are painting all rallies as violent.

And you look like an a*hole.

And tekkychick, fwiw, I grew up in Oakland so when I speak about it it is an area that I love but also has major issues. I state this because I didn't google to look for somewhere there was trouble to try and prove a point on the thread I posted about it because it's an area I'm familiar with and passionate about.

Nobody at this site was making the predictions of riots. We simply posted links to sites that claimed there were people making threat to riot.
So howey, why don't you ask the people who made the threats? You are just a lame internet drama queen with no life and you feel important when you think you're working to stamp out injustice. Guess what? You make almost zero difference. Get a life

You have no idea what I look like.

I am under no obligation to post "words of praise for all the rallies that were peaceful".

What thread are you in? This one's titled "Where's (sic) the Riots".
