The highest I have ever seen is about 18%. I call bullshit on social/welfare programs eating up 65% of the federal budget.

What those that want all that social welfare spending to continue unabated and even expanded do is eliminate from discussion all mandatory federal spending and only want to discuss discretionary as if the mandatory spending didn't exist.

$5.1 billion sounds like they cut a lot. But the defense dept budget is $849.8 billion. So they only cut about 1%.

$5.1 Billion is a cardinal number. It is an absolute value. It is definitely a lot of money.

But the defense dept budget is $849.8 billion.

But the combined global Gross National Product (GNP) is $80 Trillion.

So they only cut about 1%.

So they only cut about 0.006375%.

No lack of programs and opportunities...and if there is, spend the money on more swim lessons...not someone keeping track of the number and type of people drowning...

The club pool is swamped on competition days.

I coached almost every sport except swimming.

Swimming is so popular and important...Infant to Adult programs are everywhere....everyone should know how to swim...and at the very least, know what to do if they should fall into the water...Good Luck to your grandson...it's tough, but fun, to compete....And not only an individual sport, but a team sport....
It's completely wasteful to spend money collecting data...spend money teaching and building neighborhood pools and offering programs...
I swam before I walked...and that's a very good idea...
Swimming is just excellent exercise that you can do safely at any age...

Is the argument that we leave it up to the various states to put out drowning danger PSAs? Wouldn't it make more sense to have an already-existing federal agency promulgate standardized guidelines and issue the PSAs to all 50 states? It wouldn't take more than a couple of people who can consult with safety experts and then write up the guidelines.

I am happy to see that rather than dancing around like a circus clown on stage with a chainsaw, the Muskrats are finally taking a more measured look at what agencies and groups can be trimmed down w/o sacrificing citizen services. This one could be assigned to the CDC to periodically issue safety guidelines, esp. for new parents who might be unaware that household objects can kill their child.

That comes out to 0.0012% of the entire population of children in 2023 being at risk of drowning.

The argument is you cannot legislate safety. Just because you ban something, put out a brochure warning about the dangers of something, or whatever doesn't mean people will listen. There are stupid parents and you cannot legislate that away. Expecting government to micromanage your safety is a fool's errand.

It also doesn't make sense for the federal government to produce standardized guidelines, rules, or regulations for something that get imposed on everyone everywhere much of the time. For example, there are EPA blanket regulations on PM 10 (fine airborne dust) and ozone and allowable amounts. The Phoenix metro area routinely fails to meet either simply because it is in a DESERT AND IT'S FUCKING HOT HERE! The rules don't account for major differences in the weather, terrain, etc. It's one-size-fits-all.

It doesn't help that the mentality of these safety freaks is "zero tolerance." For that sort, one death or even minor injury, is one too many. For them no standard that doesn't eliminate ALL dangers and damage is insufficient and requires tightening. They are fools of the worst sort and should be regularly bitch slapped into impotence.
