The obvious (to me) choice is not even listed.

He is trying to boot the Ukrainian armed forced out of the Donbass region - where they have been for almost 8 years.
Causing over 10,000 deaths (on both sides) because Kiev refuses to let the locals leave.
Even though a referendum to do just that overwhelmingly showed that back in 2014.

i appreciate the respose. I think we (and Putin) are way past Donbas. a week ago I would have agreed -
but there is no reason for a 3 sided pincer movement if it's just carving off LDNR

seems to be a lot of conflicted opinions and putin isnt saying

In no particular order:

1) demonstrate how good the Russian military is

2) Humiliate America

3) weaken NATO

4) Get a promise that Ukraine will never be in NATO and that the West will not massively arm Ukraine

5) Either regime capitulation or replacement to people who will stop poking the Russian Bear in the eyes.

6) ending the conflict in Eastern Ukraine in Russias favor.

It has been suggested that Putin is suffering from some mental problems. When all the power is concentrated in one person, you can get shallow and dangerous decisions. For some reason, he is killing innocent people in another country who have done nothing to him and are no threat to his power. In the long run, he is doing serious danger to Russia. They will be faced with distrust for generations. The sanctions will do serious damage to them too.

Not likely....XI had to sign off on the plan so that theory demands that they have both gone insane at the same time.

He is the head of a top superpower already. He wants to be ranked alongside Peter the Great in centuries to come, I suspect.
i dont know what his dreams of grandeur are
His stated goal is to reunify "Little Russia" into the Federation

He wants NATO pullback and a guarantee Ukraine will never be in NATO
He wouldn't have gotten either one - especially with Biden who is leading the charge/ towing along a
reluctant G-7 who refuses sanctions to kick Russia of of SWIFT banking

Bungling Biden is worthless and weak, and everyone knows it, even, I suspect, the JPP useful idiots who try to pretend otherwise.

I strongly believe that Putin wants to take his place among the likes of Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Charlemagne, Frederick I and Bonaparte, etc. in world history.

Putin has given hints in the past. There is an offensive goal, and a defensive goal. He would like to destroy NATO, and move Europe and the Middle East into his sphere of influence. But more importantly, defensively, he needs Ukraine to fail in westernizing. If Ukraine can successfully westernize, then Russia can to, and he cannot survive in a westernized nation.

You think Russia is a "top superpower"? They have nuclear weapons, but in almost every other way they are a middling regional power. In many ways, India is stronger than Russia.

by "westerizing" i assume you mean orient Kyiv towards the EU and NATO rather then let Donbas have autonomy (orient to Russia)?

And I dont mean what he wants, but what is his endgame..
what exactly is he going to play in terms of geopolitics as the war ends, Kviy falls, etc.
