What good is the Debt Ceiling?

Refusing to raise the debt ceiling is a moronic "something" to do. Mindless action is never a good remedy.

Again, they aren't refusing to do that. They are simply refusing to continue to do it without assurance that we will do something about the spending that causes the need for it to constantly be raised.

Stop being a moronic word pussy. There is no significant semantic difference between "refusing to do it", and "refusing to continue to do it". Just stop the bullshit.

I have a great idea:

1. The Republicans refuse to raise it unless spending is cut. The Democrats refuse to raise it unless taxes are increased.

2. The debt ceiling does not get increased and the economy goes to shit more so than it already is.

3. ???

4. Profit.

However, there is a difference between absolute refusal and a negotiation point. Take your own advise Mr. TaxAndSpend.

Right. Because that is what will happen...

I have an idea. Let's negotiate and come up with a plan that reduces the spending so that we won't be downgraded.

Oh wait I have to come up with stupid numbers.

We'll go with your plan.

1. We raise the debt limit without making any changes.
2. No spending changes are done at all.
3. We are downgraded due to the fact that no debt reduction was done (as Moody's said may happen).
4. The economy goes to crap.
5. ????
6. Taxes.

The stupidity of the republican threat should still be considered and they should be dismissed from the table for it.

You'll get no quorum without the republicans. The stupidity of the argument that we should continue to do nothing about spending is inane. Consider that half of the Democrats joined the republicans rejecting the increased cap, it seems that even Democrats understand that we are at a turning point and that something needs to be done.

Only if you ignore the very real possibility of being downgraded if we do nothing about the deficit.

But if the debt ceiling isn't raised, we'll lose our AAA rating in August. Basically, in order to save our credit rating in the future, you are sacrificing our credit rating now. It makes no fucking sense.

I disagree. I think the effect of NOT raising our debt ceiling and instead, cutting our spending to match what we are taking in, would signal to the world markets that we are seriously committed to paying down our debt and behaving in a responsible way, financially, which would actually STRENGTHEN our credit rating. Even if we did something like Boehner suggests, to only raise it as much as we cut spending, dollar for dollar... this would have a similar effect. Irresponsibly raising it without cuts, is what will kill our credit rating and further decline the dollar.

It would make no sense if there was ever a time that the promise to do something about the deficit spending was actually followed after raising the debt limit. Past performance makes it clear that without serious incentive this government will not do anything in our best interest. They fear to touch entitlements, they won't discuss lowering military spending, nothing will get done in this aspect unless they are forced to the table.

If you fear to lose our rating in August, then come to the table and we'll talk.

We cannot afford to continue to pretend that they will make responsible decisions with our credit if we just raise it "this one more time"...

Well, like I said a number of times already in this thread, you're a fucking idiot. I sure as shit hope at least some GOP members of the House are not as fucking stupid as you and can explain to their idiot colleagues that any thinking along the lines of the above is so fucking stupid that anyone saying this type of shit should be shipped to an island resort at taxpayer expense just to keep them as far away from the country as possible so they don't fuck everything up royally with their goddamned idiocy.

What we cannot afford to do is default. That's what we really cannot afford to do. Hence the hostage situation.

Do you want to cut medicaire, medicaid, welfare, wic, food stamps etc? So called 'entitlements'?

Here's the deal, since you appear to need your ignorant ass educated on this... The Social Security system was a great system to have in place when we had the bulk of the people in the workforce, earning the incomes to pay into the system. Our problems are multi-fold. The first and most major problem is, what do we do when the bulk of the people paying into the system begin to retire? We have 70 million Baby Boomers approaching retirement, and we simply can't pay recipients who outnumber those paying into the system, the math doesn't work out. The second problem is, much of the stockpiled monies we've accumulated through the years, has been pilfered and spent by politicians already, so we have no cushion. The bottom line is, if the system isn't radically changed to meet the situational demands we face, it will collapse in a decade.

Now, you want to condemn republicans for 'wanting to cut medicare' but Obama cut medicare by a half trillion dollars to fund Obamacare! A lot of stink was raised over a Democrat attack ad recently, depicting a Paul Ryan lookalike, throwing granny over the cliff. I think Republicans should respond with a commercial of their own, showing what the Democrats want to do.... Picture the same granny in a wheelchair, only she is on top of a hill and a bunch of young loud punks are partying all around her... music blaring, people dancing... the booze truck arrives, and no one has any money, so this hoard of punks are now going through granny's pockets and purse, essentially ROLLING granny as she sits there in shock... as they are paying the booze guy, granny can be seen rolling off down the hill out of control... headed for the same cliff... but the partying hoard isn't even paying attention to poor granny! THAT is a more accurate depiction of what is happening here!

We cannot afford either, and that's a fact. We need to fix this now. Pretending that we have to pass every piece of legislation without thought and at emergency speed isn't going to work.

IMO, as I said earlier, they didn't go far enough. Any agreement they come up with now will just be ignored by this Administration and future Congresses... we need an Amendment that they cannot ignore.

The consequences are not remotely comparable in terms of immediacy. Again, your're threatening our current rating to save our future rating. It's ridiculous.

Edit: By the by, how much should taxes be increased and on whom?

It's been explained to your stupid ass a dozen times now, we aren't going to default. The WORST case scenario, if we absolutely do not raise the debt ceiling, would be drastic cuts in spending programs, in order to meet our debt obligations. We wouldn't default, but a whole lot of government stuff would have to be defunded. Man, that last part almost gives me a boner just thinking about it! I think it would do our Congress some good, to have to sit down and actually figure out what we can live without, where we can cut any redundancy and waste, how we can clean up the fraud and abuse of the system, etc.
