Child Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church Is Widespread (From Child Abuse: Opposing Viewpoints, P 158-166, 1994, David Bender and Bruno Leone, eds. -- See NCJ-159823)

Catholic church officials have ignored or denied priest pedophilia and have often responded by moving offending priests from place to place, allowing them access to new victims. These actions by the church have made it difficult to prosecute or even to force the acknowledgment of child sexual abuse by priests. Payouts related to charges of child abuse by priests may total $1 billion over the next 5 years. The Catholic church has historically failed to deal seriously with lawsuits, litigation, and civil responsibility but is now beginning to recognize the seriousness of the child sexual abuse problem. Child sexual abuse by priests is discussed in terms of the reluctance of law enforcement to actually arrest and prosecute priests, the loyalty of church members, and difficulties in jury selection for cases involving priests. Legal tactics of the Catholic church are considered, and the need for the church to deal openly with the problem of child sexual abuse by priests is stressed.

IN Los Angeles alone

To ease the stress on the legal system and to give victims the resources that they need to support a case, large groups of victims have banded together to file class-action lawsuits. One of the largest settlements involved the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and awarded $600 million to a group of more than 500 victims abused by 221 individual clergy members. Victims also have filed many individual cases against clergy members.

So how is the Catholic Church in New York doing with pedophilia?

US Catholic diocese agrees to pay $323m to child sexual abuse survivors. A Roman Catholic diocese in Long Island, New York, announced a new bankruptcy settlement on Thursday that would pay more than $323m to about 530 sex abuse survivors who alleged they were abused by priests when they were children.

The Illinois dioceses have paid millions in settlements to abuse survivors, while the Chicago Archdiocese has paid more than $200 million to settle abuse claims.

But what about Chicago?

The Illinois dioceses have paid millions in settlements to abuse survivors, while the Chicago Archdiocese has paid more than $200 million to settle abuse claims.

Archdiocesan officials believe the archdiocese may end up paying more than $150 million to settle future claims.

Once again, since you're so thick, this doesn't claim Catholicism has the most pedophiles.

"Raine and Kent examined the research on abuse in a number of religious denominations around the world to show "how some religious institutions and leadership figures in them can slowly cultivate children and their caregivers into harmful and illegal sexual activity."

Those institutions include various branches of Christianity as well as cults and sectarian movements including the Children of God, the Branch Davidians, the Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints as well as a Hindu ashram and the Devadasis.

"Because of religion's institutional standing, religious grooming frequently takes place in a context of unquestioned faith placed in sex offenders by children, parents and staff," they found."

Nope but I can guarantee were don't just move abusers from on location to another like the Catholic Church has done. Plus the Catholic Church is world wide and they have issues in many other countries. I think it may be because of celibacy. Celibacy makes it easy to hide your reason for never getting married and never really dating and also putting yourself in a position of authority over children. You don't even have to hide what you are doing from a wife.

I know of an elder in my denomination that was disfellowshiped for having an affair and selling drugs. So they would have swiftly got rid of a pedophile I'm sure.

I did hear of an amusing story about an Assembly of God preacher that got caught in an adulterous relationship. The elders met with him and were firing him and he said " Do you know me to speak in tongues. They all said he did . Then he said " If the Holy Spirit has ordained me with the gift of tongues how can you pass judgement on me.".

(I don't believe in the modern day gift of tongues either)

@FastLane Read and learn.

9 Myths about Priestly Pedophilia

The horror and tragedy of priests involved in the sexual abuse of minors can hardly be overstated, but some of the reporting has contained falsehoods and downright fabrications. So Crisis has put together a list of the ten most common false media claims along with fact-filled responses to them.

1. Catholic priests are more likely to be pedophiles than other groups of men.
2. The celibate state of priests leads to pedophilia.
3. Married clergy would make pedophilia and other forms of sexual misconduct go away.
4. Clerical celibacy was a medieval invention.
5. Female clergy would help solve the problem.
6. The Catholic hierarchy has done nothing to address pedophilia.
7. The Church’s teaching on sexual morality is the real problem, not pedophilia.
8. Catholic journalists have ignored the pedophile problem.
9. Requiring celibacy limits the number of men as candidates for the priesthood, resulting in a high number of sexually unbalanced priests.

Then why are you grilling her?

BTW priests generally are conservative.

And what is "FF"?

Your argument fails on so many points. You haven't acknowledged the biggest is that pedophilia exists outside the framework of any religion or social group. It's a people problem, not a religious problem. It will never go away and all we can do is watch for it and take legal action when we find it.

Hey I don't believe in any of those other branches of religion you mentioned either. The Catholic Church has a very long history of abusing kids an murdering and torturing people. It strikes me that Christ's real Church would not do those things or have a history of doing those kinds of things. Now a counterfeit church created by the evil one to draw people away from the truth might do those things though.
