Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R., Mich.) filed papers Friday to run for president in 2012, joining the race as a long-shot candidate hawkish on foreign policy and sympathetic to labor unions.
McCotter often weaves 1970s rock lyrics into his House floor speeches. He quoted Led Zeppelin during the debate over a government shutdown this year. He also plays a star-spangled Fender Telecaster guitar in a congressional rock band.
The 45-year-old Mr. McCotter, who is from suburban Detroit, is known on Capitol Hill as much for his quirky personality and guitar playing as for his policy stances. He said he is unsatisfied with the current candidates' plans for tackling unemployment and competing with China.
"They're fine people," he said of the GOP field on a Detroit radio station Friday. "But I don't think I hear anything coming from them that is going to help us seize this opportunity amidst the danger."
McCotter's website warns that "your American dream is endangered" and lists five core principles. They include: "Our liberty is from God, not the government," and "Our truths are self-evident, not relative."
