What will happen if the Cuban Mafia currently holed up in Miami are able to get back to Cuba? I can't help thinking that it may end up becoming the new Columbia. The US has had many opportunities to reconcile their differences with Cuba, but instead has chosen the nasty and vindictive option of maintaining an economic embargo which makes absolutely no sense in this day and age.

The US has absolutely no problem dealing with China, which is still a Communist regime, yet Cuba is considered to be a pariah. Jesse Helms is dead and buried for God's sake, you need to wake up and leave the past behind.

Embargoes make lots of sense. It's one of the sticks in the carrot and stick approach to diplomacy. We should embargo china and not buy from them until they treat people like humans and stop manipulating their currency, for instance.

Many nations needs a healthy dose of protectionism to buck up their economies. Free people only lose when slaves are allowed on the international labor market.

Wouldn't that leave the world at maximal production, since arbitrarily restricting trade at the individual level is the smallest level possible? What level of restricting trade leads to maximal production and happiness? All I know is that the cigar industry in Cuba has lost major ground to the Nicaraguan and Honduran makers. All the labor is cheap down there, and Cuban Tobacco is still great, but the quality of cigar sucks. Draw issues, burn issues, all I think linked to the fact that no one is actually rewarded for being a great roller or blender. There are some good vitolas from some factories but no factory is producing great cigars across the board, like Cohiba did in the late 80's early 90's. Every cigar that factory made was killer. Now there are only a few out of all the sizes and shapes and names.
