Washington Post Rolls Out Ominous New Slogan

The Washington Post has rolled out an ominous new slogan—"Democracy Dies in Darkness." The phrase, one of Bob Woodward's favorites, now appears under the paper's logo on its home page and might be introduced to the print version in the weeks to come. Shani George, the Post's communications director, tells CBS News that the slogan offers a "good, concise value statement" to new readers on Snapchat and other platforms. The move has been met with general hilarity among other members of the media, the Hill reports. A roundup of reactions:

On the Late Show, Stephen Colbert quipped that Trump will only see the "goth phase" motto if it's mentioned on Fox, Deadline reports. He said the slogan beat other choices such as "No, You Shut Up!"

"Excited to announce our new HuffPost slogan: The Night is Dark and Full of Terrors," tweeted Huffington Post politics editor Igor Bobic.

Commentary magazine editor John Podhoretz poked fun at Post owner Jeff Bezos with his suggested slogan: "Democracy Dies in Darkness But I Got This Cute Little Night-Light at Amazon for Just $4.99 and It's Free Shipping Because I Have Prime."

Slate rounds up 15 classic metal albums with titles less dark than the new slogan, including "Welcome to Hell" and "Reign in Blood."

Michael McGough at the Los Angeles Times looks at the history of newspaper slogans. His favorite is the revised version of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's "One of America's Best Newspapers," which PJ O'Rourke used for the fictional Dacron Republican-Democrat: "One of America's Newspapers."

Fox News reports that the Post denies the motto is a reaction to Trump's criticism of the paper and the media in general as "enemies of the people."

The Blaze pulls together more mockery of the "melodramatic" slogan, including the suggestion of "Postseason Hopes Also Die in Darkness" for the Post's coverage of DC sports teams.

I like it.

Trump is playing a dangerous game w/ his complete denigration of the media. He doesn't like criticism or negative press, so he's willing to completely discredit one of democracy's most important components.

Trump is really all about Trump.

The media is doing it's job.

I mean, are they really supposed to tiptoe around the fact that Trump is psychotic? Ssssshhhhh...whatever you do, don't talk about how crazy he is!

The Washington Post ran a story yesterday about how Trump has average 4 falsehoods or misleading statements a day since taking office. That's something Trump & his minions would look at as hysterical & biased...but it's the truth, and they should be reporting it. We have a POTUS who has incredibly serious issues w/ honesty.

"Ominous"?
I'd think it was rather more the opposite.

the problem is using WaPo as a source-when it's blatently expressed it's hostility to Trump, and continues to
publish what I would characterize as 1 sided perspectives makes that evaluation dubious

"is there any concern that the media outlets seem to be moving in lockstep?" t #15

They're reporting on the same events. I suppose by some mindlessly literal definition that constitutes a "conspiracy"* in the most literal meaning of the word.

NASA has found a solar system about 20 light years away with several possibly habitable planets.
CBS reported it.
NBC reported it.
PBS reported it.
I suspect some NPR affiliates reported it too.

Is that a "conspiracy"?

Why would we have a different standard about reports on President Trump?
Trump is not merely very media s a v v y . He's also a vain publicity hog, and is attuned to maximizing his own exposure on the news cycles.

I'd say it's a bit early to assume the 4th estate is conducting a megalomaniacal conquest, whether geographic, or ideological. They're news agencies. They're doing their job. Let's hope Trump does his as well, as professionally as they do.

* translated from the ancient Latin linguistic roots "conspire" means "to breathe together"

conspire (ken-spìr´) verb
conspired, conspiring, conspires verb, intransitive

[Middle English conspiren, from Old French, from Latin conspìrâre : com-, com- + spìrâre, to breathe.]
- conspir´er noun
- conspir´ingly adverb

Trump is absolutely justified to go after the media---though I have mixed emotions on whether it's a good political strategy because it can take away from his agenda.

WaPo is just the most egregious example of how so much of the media has dropped even the pretense of journalism and have descended to activism and hackery. It's gotten quite ridiculous.

To those whining about it: if Trump doesn't do it, who will? There is no legal remedy for reigning-in a media that has dove head first into the partisan tank.

The media's poll numbers are deservedly abysmal.

If you watch Fox News you need to shut up right now.
