Was Nixon a Socialist?

He was the one who created the Department of Energy and the one who introduced conservation. A lot of his far reaching ideas did not pass in the Senate, but he did start the ball rolling.

No disrespect to Carter but he introduced conservation? I'm reading.g about the history of California now and there were people in the '60's talking about conservation and I would bet there were others well before that.

Actually, none of the best of his energy policies were ever put into play. If we had paid attention and gotten of the foreign oil teat we'd be better off today. That portion shows his weak leadership skills and inability to portray and get others to follow his vision of the future. Sad really.

Carter was right, our security did depend on getting off the foreign oil teat. However his poor leadership failed us in that regard, he was unable to give a strong and compelling picture that would get the D Senate and Congress that he "led" reason to apply that policy.

Well they may have been talking about it, but he was the first to present policy to Congress, which the oily Republicans rejected! as always!

I would even venture to say that if we had implemented them, we would not be as oil dependent.
And I would again point to his inability to lead his own party and give them a compelling reason to follow what would have been good policy. Instead he failed at implementing even good ideas that would have led us into a better economy and a safer future.

He led a congress with a D majority, the constant need of the left to blame the minority party for their failure to recognize and implement legislation that would lead in the right direction is an attempt to justify failure. Reagan was able to lead a split congress and implement policy that got us out of an even worse economy than we currently have. (based on higher unemployment numbers and runaway inflation).

Hilarious given your position on the failure to regulate Fannie and Freddie while the Republicans controlled both Congress and the White House.

I just know the ones who consistently held up any change in energy policies and you will notice the (R) behind their names.

No, I have no problem pointing out that Bush was a crappy leader who did pretty much the same thing. He warned about this, but was too poor in leadership to promote what would have been good policy and may have forestalled, or at least mitigated some of, the downturn. Republicans who want everything republican to be perfect may have that problem, but I don't. Bush failed in this account, he brought it up but had such poor leadership ability he was unable to present a big picture view that could get his own party to follow him. That was a Bush failure indeed.

You "just know"...

I'll put it forward again. A leader can take an even mixed congress and get important legislation passed (Reagan did this), a failure blames the minority and says that it is somebody else's fault (Carter/Bush).

you are seriously deluded.

here is your roaring carter economy.

The picture may also be from the 1979 oil crisis. Do you remember? Anybody remember the crappy "Crisis of Confidence" speech that was Carter's answer?

IMO, that speech pretty much what doomed Carter in the 1980 election. Some of the policy in the speech were actually good ideas presented so poorly and with such general malaise in the speech nobody wanted to listen, even his own party. That's a very good example of what I've been saying in this thread.

That might be what you're saying now, and I thank you for that, but you've changed your tune considerably (and conveniently) on this score over the past two years.

I've got a pretty good memory so don't try to bullshit me.

I'm not interested in going down this road again. I've said all that I've wanted to say on that matter a long time ago.

Good choice.....Video is just about impossible to disprove or deny.:good4u:

IMO, This is an example of how people often desperately search for justification of their beliefs and are willing to accept any ridiculous scenario that might give credence to what they already believe rather than just looking at what actually happened.

Nixon's progressive policy caused problems for our nation, which remained problems due to Carter's inept leadership. Too bad IQ by itself doesn't translate to good policy and strong leadership.

I personally belive that your description is an example of how people often desperately serch for justification of their belifefs and are willing to accept any rediculous senario the media might have provided to them.

What you cant see is that your position is just as likely on both sides!

Presidents and Congresses have a very limited effect on the larger economy, what effect they do have shows up after a signifigant lag.

They can do things very short term that have a short term effect.... but real turnarounds due to policy changes take several years to show up.

It's funny but when the economy started tanking under bush, conservatives constantly bleated that all presidents have precious little to do with economic ups and downs.

Then Obama took office and that theory made an abrupt U-turn.
