Lincoln changed. He grew up in Southern racist culture and acquired its basic racism but over time his beliefs shifted. By the time of the Emancipation Proclamation he still considered the majority of blacks culturally backward but no longer thought them inherently inferior.

Lincoln was not then an abolitionist, deferring to the states to decide whether to eradicate slavery. And like almost all European Americans at the time, the president viewed Whites as superior.

“There is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality,” he said in 1858 in one of the famous debates with Stephen Douglas as he unsuccessfully vied for a U.S. Senate seat. “And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”

In 1860 Douglas was one of four major candidates for the presidency, running on a Northern Democratic ticket, but he lost the election to his old rival, Abe Lincoln. When Confederates fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861, Douglas put aside old rivalries and joined Lincoln to support the Union cause. “There can be no neutrals in this war," he declared, "only patriots and traitors” , as Douglas rallied Northern Democrats to support the president. Lincoln and Douglas remained good friends up until Douglas died just a few months later.

An obvious observation about where your head is at, to you questions about the character of a man who was born over 210 years ago is a "current event." To you, the Civil War is very current, but to the rest of us it is settled history, with no need for further debate. Slavery was wrong, and we should all be grateful it was ended by the Civil War. And I do mean "all", not just Blacks, or slaves.

Everyone has some racism. Lincoln was not very racist for his time, but if his positions would seem racist today.
