Then you truly live a sheltered life. Defend out culture is prominent among many minority cultures in the US. For example, the Polynesian culture strives to defend and maintain their culture while embracing the western world in which they live. In college, we had cultural day every year and on this day cultures from around the world would put on a show of some kind, if they chose to and each culture would make food from their home. There was maybe one white culture each year and it was the Irish.

What culture is that? Our English culture? Our French culture, Spanish, German, Irish, Scottish, Native American, Mexican, Asian, etc., I was always taught that we were a melting pot, and that is what made us the USA.

Go visit a different country and you will find you see that America does in fact have a culture. If you don't want to visit another country, just watch TV and see our culture around the globe.

I've been to a few countries and I can guarantee you that America has a culture. It is sad that people like you don't see it.

What is American culture? Your comments don't answer the question. You're describing what different people from around the world do, not what Americans do. It doesn't sound like your college said they were having American culture day.

I've been to a few countries also and can describe American culture as opposed to Spanish, German, Italian etc. So what is American culture in your opinion?

American culture has been largely influenced by the Christian tradition. The country side and cities are dotted with church steeples and not minarets; we celebrate Christmas and not Ramadan. Folks who come here should respect our traditions instead of striving to turn us into something we aren't.

I disagree and look at culture according to this definition: "The United States of America has its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, and folklore." We're not a theocracy and religion doesn't permeate our society. Our society is getting less and less religious but we still have our own culture independent of religion. We're a nation of immigrants and if a particular religion wants to erect a temple, a mosque or a church for worship, so what?

Many people born in this country still identify themselves with hyphens... Italian-American, Irish-American, German-American etc. and nobody gives it a second thought. And Muslims living here, whether born or naturalized, are still part of the culture. I think it's pretty obvious that foreigners assimilate to our culture rather than the other way around. I don't know what you mean by saying "they're striving to turn us into something we aren't." Who is "they" and what are "they" striving for?

If Muslims want to defend their culture, they can do it in their own countries.....

The immigrants that came to the Americas assimilated into their new surroundings....they didn't try to create a new France, or Germany, or Italy, or China, etc......they became Americans.

The cultures they came from weren't that much different from the Americas.....not so with Muslims....their cultures are barbaric and totalitarian for the most part...

Do you identify as a hyphenated American? Does your city have ethnic clubs like Polish Falcons, a Croatian Club, a Sons of Italy, a Hungarian Club, a Slovene society, an Ancient Order of Hibernians or a Teutonia Mannerchor?

If you accept these groups then it seems petty not to accept the same from ME immigrants. What do you think Muslims are doing different from any other immigrants?
