Protesters Accused of Hurting NYC Economy

NEW YORK -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday accused the Wall Street demonstrators of trying to cripple New York City's economy.

"What they're trying to do is take the jobs away from people working in this city," the mayor declared in his harshest criticism of the three-week-old protest that has caught the attention of the nation.

"They're trying to take away the tax base we have because none of this is good for tourism."

Although he expressed sympathy for "some of their complaints," Bloomberg warned that addressing them has to be accomplished "without hurting people and making the problem worse."

The trouble is that, up to now, the casino bankers have got away scot free with their nefarious schemes. I don't agree with much of the protests but then again who else is doing anything about the disgusting banking culture that has taken root since the 1980s? Super Freak is right when he states that a new version of the Glass-Steagall should be enacted.

So many of the world's economic problems have been caused by cowboy bankers receiving obscene bonuses for facilitating mergers, hostile takeovers, leveraged buyouts and inventing crazy derivatives which only result in good companies going to the wall or exporting jobs to China and India. If the West is ever to recover then there needs to be a return to sanity.

I think the City of New York should apologise to the millions of tourists who have been prevented from touring Wall Street and observing the fantastic things that are going on there, because of these beastly protesters.

Whatever happened to people thinking about others rather than themselves?

There is so much to see, observing an endangered species in their natural setting should not impeded by heartless protesters. Davis Attenborough will be there any day now recording them for posterity.

so harming the economy is a good thing? assuming bloomberg is correct. seems the better method would be to protest at the WH or capital hill. what you speak of is not illegal. to get glass-steagall. reenacted, do you think this is the best way to do so? i don't see them asking for SG to become law again, they are just protesting to protest and what i've seen, they aren't really protesting anything illegal.

if only the protesters took that to heart....

Whoosh, right over your head. Maybe this will help?

Wall Street has already done immense damage to the economy so I doubt that a few protesters will make much difference. No doubt if you had been around in 1775 you would have said much the same thing about the Boston Tea Party. I will agree that they need better PR and a more coherent voice.

me: One thing's for sure.
crowd: One thing's for sure.

So they are not entitled to protest?

IIRC, when I came of age, one of the first things I did was travel to DC to watch protests.
I am quite sure I ate a bagel or two while I was there.
Try another tact, this one is a dead end.

my tact is just fine, in fact so good, you couldn't answer my question. that speaks volumes.

i didn't say they are not entitled to protest. you should reread my post and then try and address it again.

apples/oranges. why do you think it is more effective to protest at wall street than capital hill? if you're protesting that wall street is harming the economy, it makes little sense to possibly harm the economy in protest.

I did address it. You should re-read my post and try to see where I addressed it.

So worried about the "harm" these protestors are doing to the economy, but nary a peep from Yurt about all the economic harm done by greedy bankers.

Typical...

is that the topic of the thread? perhaps instead of rushing to judgment as you always do, you should discern my take on that. you basically ignore my posts on that subject matter just to come in here and add nothing to thread, while whining when others add nothing.

must be tiring being such a whiny hypocrite

Yet ANOTHER insightful and substantial addition to the debate!

Keep up the good work!

Everyone knows you care more for greedy bankers that might put more money in your pocket, than you do for protestors who call attention to Wall Street's greed.
