This is how the Nixon campaign was able to capitalize on a Southern strategy, they were able to incorporate those members of the Democratic Party who were pro segregationist into the Republican base, for the most part that group of people voted Republican from then on.

Yes, within the state of Alabama he ran as a Democrat. When he ran nationally, it was not as a Democrat. That was before the Democratic Party in Alabama was a racist organization.
Nationally the south split from the Democratic Party over segregation in the 1960s. That's why Nixon saw his opportunity.
Like it or not, it's true, pre-1960s the Republican Party was more progressive on races shoes then the Democratic Party.
