LBJ still carried most of the south easily. If the south is so conservative, why did it block vote against ultra conservative presidents like McKinley, Harding, and Coolidge? Why did it block vote against the hero Eisenhower in favor of the leftist Stevenson? Why did it basically support every leftist from Wilson through Clinton?

Uh, yeah, you still can't explain away the fact that the origins of the GOP are conservatism, and the pro-business elements of the Federalist and Whig parties. It's why the most conservative presidents have all been Republicans, and I'm not even talking about Reagan.

But, if you want to argue that the Democratic Party's evolution from Jeffersonian and Jacksonian liberalism to Wilsonian leftist (well, maybe not Wilson, but subsequent leftists) lets it off the hook for it's atrocious history, then knock yourself out.
