No doubt for purely political reasons. As soon as the Republicans or others stopped caring, so did he.

I will give President Obama credit for having the spine to stand up to the Democrats and follow the advice of the Pentagon and boots on the ground about the Surge. He knew he didn't know shit about the military but he was smart enough to take the collective advice of our nation's best experts. Not every President has the spine to do the same.

Obama is both an extremely intelligent man, and also cognizant of the fact that no matter how bright you are, you cannot be an expert in all things, or even most things. So he chose talented, experienced advisors and aides, and best of all -- he listened.

Unlike the rotting turnip that occupies our White House currently.

Which are all critical necessities for a good leader. Obama wasn't perfect, especially in the beginning and, like others, he did make mistakes like with General Crystal. Reagan made mistakes too like PATCO mess. Both, of course, several levels above in terms of leadership compared to Mr. "You're Fired!".
