Bring on the taxes, Vermont counterprotesters say

Protesters nationwide demanded lower taxes on Wednesday. A group in Vermont can't get enough of them.

Calling itself S.O.S., or Save Our State, the group held a small pro-tax protest in Montpelier, the national income tax-filing deadline, to drive home that taxes pay for needed programs and state employees perform necessary duties.

About two dozen people crowded around the state Tax Department's help window while organizers turned in single-signature petitions, designed to look like a tax form, that organizers called SOS-EZ forms.

They list 17 state programs that could be kept whole with what organizers say would be a modest tax increase.

"It's not just a day to worry about taxes; we value our institutions and the programs the state offers," said S.O.S. organizer Chris Curtis, an attorney with Vermont Legal Aid. "We can't pave our own roads. We can't keep our own courthouse doors open. It's frustrating that some days of the week the courts are closed."

The protest came as thousands of demonstrators gathered nationwide for anti-tax rallies modeled on the original Boston Tea Party.

Dennise Casey, a spokeswoman for Republican Gov. Jim Douglas, said he remained steadfast in his opposition to new taxes, but that taxpayers have the option to give the state more than legally required.

"I am assuming that all of these individuals who are advocating for paying more taxes have led by example by paying more taxes today," Casey said. "As for struggling Vermont families, the governor is opposed to higher taxes."

The Douglas administration has proposed cuts to state programs and hundreds of job cuts as a way to close an estimated $200 million deficit to the $1.1 billion budget.

LOL

I doubt Gov. Douglas is going to see any extra tax money from these retards.

you know if they really want to pay more in taxes i'm sure the irs wont mind if they overestimate how much they owe. nothing is stopping them.

it is truly amazing how simple it is. All those wealthy Dems who 'don't mind paying more'.... could easily do so. Just open up those wallets and give until your hearts bleed no more....

Of course... that just never seems to happen. If you call them out on it... they simply reply.... 'I didn't do anything illegal, all my deductions were valid... but we should raise taxes on the wealthy, I don't mind paying more'

To which we would say... if you don't mind paying more why dont you... which starts the circular discussion all over again....

'because I dont HAVE to... I didn't do anything illegal, all my deductions were valid, but we should raise taxes on the wealthy because I dont mind paying more...."

I am trying o find the info on the studies, but apparently when a lot of middle class people were asked if they minded their taxes going up, they said "yes we mind very much!".

But when the same group was asked if they would pay more taxes provided that the rich got hit even harder on their taxes, they agreed to it.

So they don't want to pay more, unless they know someone else is going to pay even more.

....
I have no problem with Vermonters wanting to increase their taxes. I have a problem with Vermonters wanting to increase federal taxes.

Why don't you liberals understand that? Limit the federal government to its enumerated powers, and let the states become socialist utopias if they want. If I don't want socialism, I have the option to move to a low tax state. If you want socialism, move to a socialist state.

Isn't that freedom for all?
