I'm pretty sure the electoral college was intentionally involved in the design from the very beginning......
Other than a few minor changes, most procedural, the electoral college works pretty much today like it did in the late 1700s. States were to get electoral votes equal to the number of members they had in Congress (House + 2), whomever got a majority of what that number of electoral votes happened to be at the time was the winner, the House would decide the President if no one had a majority with each State getting one vote, and the Senate would choose the VP if the electoral vote process didn't do the job.
Very little has changed from the original concept. However, the left seems to thing the process is something new they've never heard of as much as they whine about the current results. Not one mention is given to popular votes yet they harp on popular votes and ignore a system that's been in place for over 220 years.
