Unity Among the Party's

Random observation here. When I was younger I always felt like there was much more dissention among Democrats and liberals while Republicans and conservatives were more united if you will. Now it feels like the opposite is occurring. Not that Democrats are walking in lock step but they seem to be much more united while there is all out fighting raging among Republicans and conservatives.

Am I wrong on that?

Nope. I think you are spot on. You have several factions of conservatism within the party and none of them can seem to come together. Look how many candidates they have. Almost each one highlights a different area of conservatism with hardly one wanting to give an inch. Enter "I'll say anything" Trump. I understand some of his appeal but I sure don't get how he is blowing everyone out like he seems to be other than people cannot find one candidate that they really, really want to get behind so they're just supporting the guy in the lead.

Within the Republican Party there's always been a social conservative wing and a more libertarian pro-market wing but they have co-existed pretty well. All that kind of seems out the window today. I'd argue it's a good thing having candidates within the party running who hold different positions but the question is can the party (voters) come together around one in time for the general election. Right now that's definitely up in the air.

Always ? Don't think so. Didn't need it until morals died. That's a pretty recent thing really.
What's divided the GOP is RINOism. Their total capitulation in this century is a cancer that is going to transfer the party. Remains to be seen just how.
But let's not pretend the same isn't going on in the donkey camp. They are just enforcing silence with threat. Sanders doesn't have to play ball which is why moderate dems who would ordinarily roll their eyes at him are listening. When the party ignores it's own it will catch up to it.

Fair enough. I was thinking since I started following politics the Republicans have been split into those two camps. I realize it hasn't always been that way.
