United States was among the last nations in the Americas to abolish slavery

"1833 - Britain passes Abolition of Slavery Act, ordering gradual abolition of slavery in all British colonies. Plantation owners in the West Indies receive 20 million pounds in compensation"
from Cinnabar's link.

'Compensation'. That may have been a better alternative.

I believe Cameron's family did very well out of that lot. Class societies don't. of course, compensate mere slaves, only their exploiters! The ghastly thing about American slavery was that it was racial, and that the racism is still deep in the American mind. In the UK it was distant and belonged to the usual thieves; our kind of crap was all about how we were 'improving' those we robbed. Makes for naïve self-importance, like that of the Brexiteers.

Yeah. Slavery in the American colonies started in the 17th century. All the Democrats supported it and all the Republicans were against it.

BS. Why do you people have to ransack history to prop up your inane interpretations of party politics? Do you think anybody is convinced by it? Most of the Democrats you refer to have been solid Republican for the past half century.

Quite -until there was electoral advantage in gaining the racist vote, at which point the Republicans ditched Lincoln's memory in double-quick time.

How silly. There were anti slavers in the north and the south. There was slavery in the north too. Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina were slave states. The underground railroad was run from the south by southerners and freed slaves working together. You guys say the most ridiculous things.

And the only nation to kill hundreds of thousands of its citizens and destroy 40% of its economy to do it.
Silly since it would have gone away on its own or coujd have been negotiated as did ither countries.
But Lincoln lusted for blood.

Exactly. And why Lincoln was arguably our worst President ever. Booth was a hero for what he did. Yeah I said it.

The only safe place for escaped slaves was Canada, under the wicked imperial heel! :)

It occurred to me the other day that when the USA wanted to enslave people we went to less developed areas and used force to destroy villages and enslave people, then take them against their will away to a land they never wanted to go to.

But now when people from those same places wish to come to the USA, Trump doesn't want to let them, (calling those countries you know what,) even though it is very possible they could be joining long lost distant relatives.

When they didn't want to come here we forced them to. When they do want to come here, we refuse to let them.

Making America great again?

Sounds like what is being made great is our hypocrisy.

Hello Penderyn,

Slave owners created this narrative that they were 'helping' the slaves by 'giving them a good life,' and that they were 'too stupid to do any better for themselves.' All of these myths were made up as a way for slave owners to get beyond the guilt of what they were doing.

Hello Celticguy,

Should he have taxed the rich to pay for that?

Or just raise taxes on everybody....

At that time only the rich were taxed anyway.
None of the above.
Use a bond issue if its that important. Anti slavety folks could put put their money where their mouth is.
Lets not forget Abe soent half a million researching how to remove every single black person from the country, free or slave.

Hello Sirthinksalot,

Before they all became Trump Republicans...

My, how the parties they do change.

Hi Politalker,

Your tongue in cheek comment aside, yes the Democratic party has changed a lot. 30 years ago, they used to be the party that blue collar, hardworking Americans could support. Now they are the party of hate whitey, hate the police, buy votes with "free stuff", take away people's rights, socialism, etc. etc.

It's sad really. I used to vote for Democrats when I was younger. I'm not sure if it was because I was young and foolish or if the party was worth respecting back then.

Yes, Lincoln was the first Republican President.

Many Democrats became Republicans following the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Now, many Republicans seem to have reached a limit to their tolerance of hatred. It's hard to keep up with how many Republicans have announced their retirement from Congress. What's it up to since Trump took over? 18?
