(CNN)When Ukrainian forces entered the city of Izium Saturday, it was more than a major military victory. It was a sign the war in Ukraine might be entering a new phase, one in which Russian troops are scrambling to hold onto the territory they captured over the past six months.

Russian forces were forced to flee the strategic eastern city just five days after Ukrainian forces began a new offensive eastward through the Kharkiv region.

"Russians escaped and left weapons and ammo behind. City center is free," a spokesperson for the Bohun Brigade of the Land Forces of Ukraine said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his evening address on Saturday:

"These last days, the Russian army has shown us its best (side) — its back," he said. "There is no place in Ukraine for the occupiers. There never will be," he added.
 
Putin can tell his people any lie he wants


He can hand it all back and tell the Russian people all the Nazis have been eradicated and that the Ukraine is now free

Trump's very own National Security Advisor John Bolton said that Putin was anticipating that Trump would withdraw from NATO in his second term, so it seems to me Vlad was hoping American influence in Eastern Europe would fade away without having to fire a shot.

Good article, was going to post it myself. Lotsa good stuff in there.
Putin has really got himself in a jam. But then there’s no politburo he has to deal with that the USSR had, so no telling how he’d be ousted. Slowly the reality of the war seems to be filtering in to the Russian public.

To date, the similarities with ' The Battle of the Bulge ' are evident;

The Russian Ministry of Defence on Monday stated that Russian Aerospace Forces, missile troops and artillery “continued to launch high-precision attacks” at the Ukrainian units and reserve forces in Kharkov region. The Ukrainian forces that used to be in well-fortified positions in that heavily wooded region have now stepped out into the open and are being targeted for intense air, missile and artillery strikes.
