Ukraine’s lightning advance near Kharkiv leaves Russian forces in disarray

Moscow acknowledges it has pulled back from the strategic towns of Izyum and Kupyansk

Ukrainian forces enter key city of Izium in a sign Kyiv's new offensive is working

(CNN)When Ukrainian forces entered the city of Izium Saturday, it was more than a major military victory. It was a sign the war in Ukraine might be entering a new phase, one in which Russian troops are scrambling to hold onto the territory they captured over the past six months.

Russian forces were forced to flee the strategic eastern city just five days after Ukrainian forces began a new offensive eastward through the Kharkiv region.

"Russians escaped and left weapons and ammo behind. City center is free," a spokesperson for the Bohun Brigade of the Land Forces of Ukraine said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

This must be an embarrassment for Putin.

They should give that Russian ammo that was left behind back to the Russian army.....special delivery.

This must be an embarrassment for Putin.

I don't see how Putin achieves any of his objectives without mobilizing Russia on a full wartime footing.

He is basically fighting with a peacetime Russian army which simply isn't big enough to conquer Ukraine.

Russian Forces Reeling from Ukrainian Counteroffensive

KYIV, Ukraine September 11 — A day after routing Russian forces in a lightning advance that seized hundreds of square miles and a strategic town in the northeast, Ukraine claimed additional territory on Sunday in an offensive that has swiftly reshaped the battlefield in the nearly 200-day-old war and left Moscow reeling.

Ukraine’s rapid gains in the Kharkiv region have significantly weakened Russia’s hold on eastern Ukraine, which it has used as a stronghold to wage its war since February. Ukrainian officials said on Saturday that their troops had retaken the city of Izium, a strategically important railway hub southeast of Kharkiv that Russian forces seized in the spring after a bloody, weekslong battle.

The West is losing.

It's not a good sign for Russia.
However, Russia probably has no interest in the Kharkiv Oblast (where Izium is).

What Russia (probably) REALLY wants is the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts.
And they already have the Luhansk Oblast.

My guess is the rest is a diversion OR they are just seeing how much land they can take before they take Donetsk and call for a cease fire.
Though, frankly, I think that is a pretty, stupid tactic.
They should have - from the beginning - just attacked the Donbas and left the rest of Ukraine alone.
If they are not careful - they could end up losing everything they previously gained.

Once again, I 100% support Russia helping to free the Donbas.
Both Oblasts voted well over 80% to leave Ukraine.
The same with Crimea.
Which voted over 90% to leave.
And polls to this day still have them overwhelmingly glad they left Ukraine.

But I am 100% against them attacking any other area.
Putin is REALLY, fucking up.
After doing such a brilliant job in Syria.

Then that is a massive step backwards. On February 24 Putin announced his objectives were the full demilitarization of Ukraine and it's full "denazification".

Ukrainian is better armed than ever in it's history, the government in Kyiv is in full control, and NATO is larger, stronger and more united than ever, and NATO's presence in Eastern Europe is more ensconced than ever.

If Putin is now limiting his objectives to a strip of land along the Volga River and the Sea of Azov, that is tiny territorial gain for an enormous cost.

The newsreels I've seen of ' abandoned Russian military equipment ' features rusted tanks with weeds growing under them.

Sept. 11- A fast-moving major offensive by Ukraine has liberated a wide swath of territory from Russian forces in the northeast Kharkiv region, shocking military analysts and not just breaking what had been a long stalemate, but marking what appears to be a turning point in the nearly seven-month-old war.

Ukrainian forces continued to push deep into what had been Russian-occupied territory over the weekend, as Russian forces rushed to fall back in what may be an attempt to avoid thousands of its troops being encircled. The stunning mechanized advance, which began on Tuesday and seems to have caught Russian forces off guard, has been confirmed by images shared on both Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels. Even the Russian Defense Ministry has acknowledged being pushed back, though it described the rout as a “regrouping.” In fact, it appears that Ukraine has collapsed Russia’s northern front in the country. On Sunday night, Russia reportedly retaliated with strikes on the region’s energy infrastructure which cut off power to at least three major cities.
